Hipster wanna-be (sort of). Help?

Asked by IzzyAndHerBeans (359points) January 22nd, 2012

I don’t want to become the hipsters I see on Tumblr, but I’m looking to change my wardrobe so reflect the more creative personality I’ve taken on as of late. I don’t have a huge budget, but I have some money to spare. I’m looking to buy clothing that is relatively cheap, yet fashionable. I’m also looking for some advice on how to style myself. (I’m bad when it comes to fashion advice and what not). So, if you’d like to offer a bit of advice to me or direct me into the direction of a fashionista, I’d appreciate it.

Just get older :D

Seriously though, many of the things that hipsters are into because retro is deck are things that us older folks grew up with back when it was still called “cool”. In fact, you might find some of our old clothing at thrift stores. We outgrew tight jeans and T-shirts from ‘80s/90s rock bands (often in more ways than one) long enough ago for them to come back into fashion.

No lie; thrift stores.

Seriously, this is easy. Just go to your local thrift shop(s). In all of my 29 years, I don’t care what the popular trend has been, it’s easiest to dress in a creative way if you put the clothes together yourself… rather than walking into a department store where the most popular and uncreative styles are already put together for you.
If you want to reflect your creativity in your style, then, make your style your own. Copying someone else’s “creative” style isn’t creative.

Add some second-hand clothes to the mix. The price is right, and even before Annie Hall as well as ever since, adds some unmistakable tweaks to your wardrobe that you might not find anywhere else.

Sorry @jerv and others missed yours, but I do ditto it.
