What do YOU want more of on the internet?

Asked by IzzyAndHerBeans (359points) January 22nd, 2012

If you read my previous post about wanting to get my writing out there on the internet, this might pertain to you as well. I’m curious to learn what people want to see more of on the internet. What types of topics do people not talk enough about? Do you think the internet is cluttered with madness? If you could change one thing about the internet, what would you change? If you could read any article on any topic, what article would you read?

This answer will be very different depending on the person. What I’m looking for?

- Sites with NO ADS
– Innovative interfaces that will make me want to keep coming back
– Solid and consistent content

The subject matter could be anything from astronauts to zebras..

An (internet-)etiquette course/test would be nice.
But on second thought that would be nice overall, in real life some people could do with one of those courses.

I want no websites that play music the moment you load them and I want Adwords banned.

Less porn, so more safe sites

- More free software (not just software that costs no money, but actually free… as in “free speech”)

- More thought before posting. This “stream of consciousness” Tweeting and FB updates goes beyond TMI!

- More proper spelling/grammar. I’m not talking University-level perfection, but merely enough to at least give the impression that you graduated the third grade.

@College_girl Considering how much money the porn industry makes from the internet, and how much taxes they wind up paying on that, and how many technological advances in video have resulted from the porn industry, I think that it’s best to leave that alone unless you are willing to fill in the hole that would leave in the economy and the technology.
Besides, you have to go looking for it to find it; it’s pretty easy to avoid.

@jerv You’d think that the open-source crowd would have come up with a less-ambiguous term by now.

@Nullo Freeware, Free Software, and Open Source software are three different things. The type of software I am talking about is Software Libre; a license even less restrictive than Open Source.
As for the definition of “free”, take that up with Richard Stallman,

A group self-study site. It would be similar to an online course, but there would not be any instructor, just people who want to look into a certain topic. There would be a schedule of readings and possibly exercises.

@jerv actually its too easy to find. I’ll do a search on something totally unrelated and I can still get a picture of some naked woman. I do take care to turn the filters on, but from a past of knowing your father looks at it and has huge files of it on his computer and has cheated on your mother from contributing to it, you kind of want it to be taken off the internet. I know it’s a personal problem, but the question is what YOU want more of not what everyone agrees on. So that’s just my opinion.

jerv's avatar

@College_girl I’ve never had that problem, even with filters off, which makes me wonder what you were looking for to find it. As an aside, it does seem like a case of misplaced blame; I am pretty sure that your dad would’ve cheated even without the porn. I mean, adultery existed before the internet, computers, photography, printing presses… but you are correct that this question was about opinions, and you gave yours. I merely feel that it would not solve anything, and may have unintended consequences.

@jerv Why don’t people just start using Libre (a good choice; the meaning is clear, or at least understandable, and the French part adds a dash of sophistication) instead of ‘free’, save us all the confusion? It would be good for the image, too; to the uninitiated, it looks like a pack of no-accounts grubbing for illegal copies of things.

@Nullo Because that makes too much sense :p
