Recommended free services for comic website?

Asked by MisterBlueSky85 (892points) May 20th, 2008

So I recently finished up a comic for a school paper. I’d like to put the archives online organized by date like most comic strip artists. To name a few (and so you know what I’m going for)...

http://wondermark.com/
http://xkcd.com/
http://www.overcompensating.com/

Problem I have no idea how to go about this. I’m sure there are some free database services and stuff out there, but I don’t even know where to look. Any pointers?

So, you want to publish your comics online for free, right? You could just create a mini-blog and post all the comic images. For example, http://garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com/ is a popular online comic strip and it uses Tumblr.com which lets you start your own site in less then 30 seconds.

Also do you simply want to post your comics online or do you want to make them using a web app ?

Do they have to be searchable?

Hey, I love that blog! That looks like a good idea, maybe a plan B. If possible, I’d like to be able to have each blog on it’s own page so I could put ads up (I know, I’m awful, but it’s not like I was ever paid for my 500+ hours of work).

Searchable? They won’t be transcribed, if that’s what you mean (too much work). I’d like to have them sortable by date, however, or at at the absolute least put in chronological order.

Thanks for helping me out, guys! :D

What do you mean by each blog on its own page?
If you mean having a seperate page for each comic page, you can do that like this. Also tumblr has an option to display the number of stories you want on the home page. SO if you want you could just display one comic strip on the home page. Tumblr also lets you sort by dates and even lets you change the dates so if you can publish a comic saying it was posted on June 18th instead of todays date

Hmmm, I’d use Wordpress for something like this…if you won’t want to build the site form the ground up.

Yup Mirza you know what I meant. And I’m pretty sure I just signed up for Tumblr just now.

I’m looking at Wordpress too. If Tumblr allows enough customization all by itself, I’ll just go with that.

This has been super helpful. I $*#$ing love Fluther. Lurve for all.

@misterblue: if you decide to stick with tumblr, let me know when you are done setting up your comic site. I can hopefully send some decent amount of traffic to your tumblr via my site (which shockingly has 438 followers)

That sounds fantastic. Hopefully I can send some traffic back your way too – I went to a large university and had a good number of fans. Let’s help each other out!
