Dealing with self injury scars?

Asked by Prettyjay28 (65points) February 4th, 2012 from iPhone

This is something that a rarely talk about its been bothering me for a while. When I was 12–15 years old I dealt with self injury and a eating disorder, now 18 I have scars all over my body, and even though most have faded they are still noticeable to me. I’m very insecure to wear bathing suits, and even sometimes I feel self conscious while having sex with my fiancĂ©, who has been there for me ever since I started cutting. He said he does not mind the scars and what’s important to him is me not my body, but I still feel uneasy.

Are there any meds I can use to fade the scares on my stomach, ankles and thighs?

Mederma. It’s a lotion/ointment you put on every day for a few weeks. It’s not cheap, but it does work.

I found this product review on all types of scar medications that seems helpful before you buy any of them.

One: If your partner says it doesn’t bother him, stop worrying. He loves you very much.
Two: If it bothers you too much, discuss it with your doctor, and ask for a referral to a dermatologist.

I’ve dealt with similar issues and have a lot of scars due to self injury. The more comfortable I’ve become with myself, the less they’ve mattered. I spent a lot of money trying to reduce the scarring, which unfortunately didn’t work. Bio oil can help in reducing the scars. I’ve spent big money on prescription products and there’s no difference. Unless the cream is applied during the healing process, little can be done to get rid of the scar.
I never would’ve believed someone if they told me that I’d gradually become more comfortable with the scars as I became more comfortable with myself but it does happen over time.
