Have you been treated for toenail fungus?

Asked by 6rant6 (13700points) February 7th, 2012

If you or someone you know has been treated for toenail fungus, why did you seek treatment (for appearance sake or something else)? What kind of treatment did you get, what was the outcome, was it covered by insurance and what was the cost?

I’ve read that people with toenail fungus are sometimes denied major surgeries like organ transplants until the fungus is cured. Is that correct?

I used an over the counter remedy. It worked nicely but any treatment of nail infections is slow as baciaclly what you’re doing is stopping the infection spread to the newly grown nail while waiting for the diseased bit to grow out.

I once had a small infection on part of a toenail. I used an over the counter antifungal, I think it was some sort of acid, and it cured. If it had not worked I would have taken Sporonox for it. Toe fungus when it gets bad is very bad. The nails get disfigured, yellow, and hard. It looks bad, and also can be uncomfortable I would think. It becomes difficult to cut the nail, I’d rather avoid it if possible.

I got that Da** toenail fungus and it sucks! I’ve been fighting it for over 2 years! I’ve tried that liquid stuff that’s some sort of acid, gone through 4 or 5 bottles of it, without much help from it. I’ve tried the Tea Tree oil and all it does is make it stink real bad and turn the nail yellow. Looks like my finger nails did back when I was a heavy smoker and smoking 3 packs a day. It’s made the nail hump up and get very sensitive to touch. Went to a foot doctor about a year and a half ago and she was a real bitch. She used one of those heavy duty side cuts we call Dikes in the machine shop and cut the nail out almost all the way to the half moon part at the root. Then she had the nerve to laugh at me when I said that F**KING HURT! As blood was running out of my big toe in a steady stream making a big puddle of blood on the floor. She’s the kind of bitch that would enjoy shoving bamboo slivers under her ex boyfriends toenails just for fun, or maybe her ex girlfriends toenails. She’s the only foot doctor in town and its 45 miles to the next closest one but I ain’t ever going back to that Bitch!
Now when the nail got almost grown back out to normal length, its now badly ingrown! And just to make it interesting the fungus hit again about six months ago so now both big toes are badly ingrown and all humped up with the fungus growing under them again.
I have found that soaking my foot in a pan of hot water with Epsom salt in it for awhile helps before carving on the nail and digging the gunk out from under it. I’m thinking about adding a little bleach to it to see if that will help kill the fungus. It should at least get rid of the yellow. Now if I could just get them to grow out without the edges curling down and turning ingrown real bad I’ll be OK.
All I really know about this is it really sucks! The only person I’d wish this on is my ex wife! May she be cursed with it for the rest of her life. ;-Þ

@ColoradoHermit You need to try Sporanox (I think it is still prescribed a week at a time once a month for three months) and while taking it I would also use the topical at least sporadically. Many doctors either don’t know about it, or are not accustomed to prescribing it. You probably could call the pharmaceutical help line and they could possibly recommend a doctor in the correct specialty in your area who prescribes it regularly.

Listerine on your toe nail every night and day. Just pour it on and let it dry on its own. Try to get it under the nail as much as possible. Then everyday, gently scrape the part under it and trim the nails once a week. If its rounded on top. Than file the rough parts and then add the listerine.
Another remedy is Vicks vapor rub. But I think that takes longer.

Years ago I had a toe nail fungus on both big toes. It wasn’t the looks of it that bothered me but since the nail had lifted from the nail bed it was painful when I wore certain footwear. The doctor gave me a 3 month RX of Lamisil and had me come in every month for blood work because he said it effects the liver in SOME patients. I took it the full 3 months and at home I reinforced the medication by swallowing raw garlic before bedtime and soaked my feet daily in sea salt and tea tree oil. Worked like a charm. The fungus left and it’s never coming back. It also made my feet super soft!

I got another question about it that I forgot to include above. Can you get re-infected from your shoes? If you can, how do you kill the fungus in your shoes without ruining them? Or do I just need to get rid of them and get some new shoes?

I’ll try the Listerine and see if it works. I got a big bottle of it and cant stand to use it so don’t know anything else to do with it. So even if it doesn’t work on toenail fungus, I’ll still get rid of it without just throwing it away!

Yes you can get reinfected if you are wearing the same moist, old shoes. I’d buy new shoes if you can but if not, leave shoes outside and let them fully air dry before wearing again. Never wear the same shoes 2–3 days (switch up your foor wear) in a row and always have on clean, dry socks. In mild weather let your feet get air and expose them to the sun as much as possible (sandles). Powder the inside of all your shoes with baking soda. Soak feet regularly in sea salt and water.
