Is the World Poetry Movement a scam?

Asked by Mtrencher (187points) February 11th, 2012

I got a letter from the World Poetry Movement saying that I’m a semi-finalist and that I’ve been selected for publication. Is this a scam?

Sorry to say, but most likely yes.
I can find no reference to ” World Poetry Movement” in my vast collection of legitimate poets market resources.
There are many poetry sites and organizations that are questonable and self serving and solicit contributors to buy into their self promoting subsidy publishing rackets.
In reality, they are seeking you to PAY them for publishing your work in their anthologies which they in turn sell to the participants, along with attempting to sell you various workshop participation at very high prices.

I too write poetry and your best source for legitimate markets and warnings against certain publishing scams is the ” Writers Digest Poets Market.” The best and most reliable resource for poets.

@Mtrencher: Is the site asking for money before they publish? That is always a red flag.

Your poem has promise but for now is only a first draft. Do you have an English teacher who can help you with the issues of form, meter, and figurative language?

@gailcalled No, it’s not. the only money you pay is for the author’s bio but that’s not required. You can buy the book if you want but you don’t have too.

@Mtrencher, it is a lovely poem. Write because you love to write. I’m sorry to say, the organization is listed here: http://www.winningwriters.com/contests/avoid/av_avoid.php

and a dozen other places as scam. Sorry.

Well you would get to enjoy the physical copy of your poem along with others. Perhaps with others you can network and collaborate.

I have been published several times in the world poetry movement ‘s anthology. You don’t have to pay to get the book with your poem in it, if you don’t want to, they charge you for your certificate, gold embossed, written in calligraphy, if you want it. Ordinarily, it is hard to get noticed as a poet, let alone get published; this way you enter the contest, and possibly win publication rights. after I won in the contest, everytime there after, I was invited to be published. Is it a scam, who cares, I’m published and getting noticed for my writing. I have seen my books at Barnes and Noble, and on Amazon .com. It is only a scam, if they ask you for money, and they do not. The way I see it is that, we help them to fill up their books, and we get published.
