Does toothpaste really work in clearing up acne pimples?

Asked by partyrock (3870points) February 20th, 2012

Does using toothpaste really clear up acne pimples?

I’ve heard it before and one of my classmates said that it clears pimples BUT it make your skin very dry….. If it does work how effective is it ?

I’ve been using a dead sea clay mud mask on my skin, but I don’t think it’s helping me any.

Thanks

As a general acne treatment, no.

As an “I have a special event tomorrow and cannot possibly attend with this goiter sized zit on my face”??? Yes.

To use it, you need plain old white toothpaste. Put a small dab on the zit, and let it sit overnight. Yes, it is drying…but that’s the point. It will make your skin flake in that area (usually you’ll notice the flaking a day or two later ).

I did this in my youth, especially when PMSing.

Personally, I find salicylic acid to work better at keeping pimples at bay. However, I don’t have acne. To really treat acne, you should seek treatment through a dermatologist to see what would be the best option for you.

As suggested above, it does work for an individual pimple or so. But if you really want to get rid of pimples than you need a good diet and exercise routine. Also don’t wash your face at night or any time by taking hot showers. That will just make things worse. Gently clean your face at night with soap and water and then close your pores with ice water and then genlty clean some more with clearasil.
To help maintain a healthy ph balance eat plenty of acidy fruits that will help level off your alkaline levels. Avoid eating to much protiens (meats) and flour and sugar that will raise your acidic levels. If you want to be sure if this is the problem, you can buy ph strips at a pharmacy to see if you are too acidic or alkaline based. Most of the time pimples are from increased from having your ph levels be too acidic. You want your Ph levels to be around 7.0 to7.4. The lower the number the more acidic you are.
The more acidic the food the higher alkaline levels it produces.
The more alkaline in the food the higher acidic levels it produces. It sound weird but your body does the opposite with it.
Also don’t over wash your face a lot during the day. You start to stip it of the necessary oils and ph it has to protect your skin from germs and bacteria, and can actually make it much worse. So no harsh cleaners or antibotics or scrubbing to hard. Scrubbing really hard damages the skin on the surface that is there to protect it.
Treat you skin like you would a babies bottom.
And most of all get a good nights rest every night and maybe change your pillow cases more often and make sure not to wash them in fabric softners or scented detergents. There is always the possiblilty that you may have a mild allergy that can also make matters worse.

The point is that it dries out the pimple, and the pimple goes away. Works for me.
You’ll just need a good face lotion to take care of the dryness, after the pimple is gone.

It’s usually just the baking soda in toothpaste that absorbs the oils within a pore.

No. Get some generic retin a. It works. It’s cheap too.

Another thing that can help get the redness out of a big zit (if you have an important meeting to go to) is hemorrhoid cream. It won’t cure your acne, but it can make a big red zit less noticeable and easier to cover with your concealer.

^Yes @Kardamom. And that reminds me of yet another thing that works to take out the redness Visine <<<Zit camoflauge tips included

@SpatzieLover The other important thing to remember is to make sure that you don’t keep your hemorrhoid cream and your toothpaste in the same place! You don’t want to wander into the bathroom in the middle of the night and grab the wrong thing : P
