Why is "Angry Birds" so addictive?

Asked by rojo (24179points) February 22nd, 2012

Had the same problem with Tetris many years ago. So, what is it that makes you want to play “just one more game”?

Games like this mess with the reward center of your brain. Your brain wants to get to the next level (the reward) so you keep playing compulsively. Or something like that.

People are mostly stupid.

Gee. Thanks @cheebdragon. I think.

@cheebdragon that’s a bit judgmental now, don’t you think? Even super geniuses need some casual fun every now and then.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard But for us casual fun is quantum physics equations, not the angle/velocity ratio of a bird fucking pigs up.

My sister loves it…a UPS exec who never gamed.

She likes the noise and to get the pigs. :)

Ha ha. I’m still trying to figure that out. Ive tried it a few times to see what all the fuss was about and my basic reaction was ” meh” so the app sits there unused just taking up space :)

Give me a game of Sudoku any day of the week. Or Scrabble and several other word games.

I believe this article answers your question.

I was hooked for a while, then I moved on to Glass Tower, Zen Stones and Bubble Burst :-)

I also love sudoku, backgammon and 500 rummy! Not to mention Kindle, Kobo, Color Splash, and on and on and on.

One of these days I am going to try making a phone call on my iPhone just for some variety.

It was never addicting to me, and I have an iPhone. I hated that game. I played it maybe 3 times in my life. I don’t understand what people get about it. I’m more of a Tetris kind of girl :)

@rpm_pseud0name That link is fantastic. It explains the addiction, except whether the game designers lucked into it or seriously thought about the different aspects of the game.

I am one of the few peole on the planet who have never played the game. I have seen it in action but knew I would waste time with it.

That was a good, and informative link @rpm_pseud0name. It helped clarify the whys’ and hows’. As an aside, I first tried it on an iphone and agree with @Buttonstc “Meh”, but when I played it on a tablet, it became much more interesting and enjoyable.

Okay ill rephrase…..it appeals to the mostly stupid part of everyone’s brain…..somewhere near the area that stores completely useless facts that will never get you farther in life…..better?

wundayatta's avatar

What is “Angry Birds?”

cheebdragon's avatar

You don’t want to know….in fact, it’s best to just forget you ever read this question….like area 51…

rojo's avatar

@cheebdragon Would this be the same area that remembers all the lyrics to so many songs but can’t remember if you put underwear on this morning?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I can tell you exactly why it’s addictive. You see, it was actually created by a secret sector of the government, whose sole intention was to [REDACTED]

cheebdragon's avatar

@willworkforchocolate Damn it man! Now they know too much!

lonelydragon's avatar

It’s therapeutic. You can take your frustrations out on the pigs!

HungryGuy's avatar

@lonelydragon – Or on the birds if you’re a total klutz at the game :-0
