What's the difference between playing Box and playing Straight/Box in the Daily 3 CA lottery?

I don’t get the explanation on the site or back of the playslip.
Does choosing one over the other give you better odds of winning?

Lotteries are a tax on people who don’t understand probability theory.

Instead of playing the lottery, put the money in an envelope. Watch the lottery results, and when your numbers come up, take the money out of that envelope. On average, your winnings will be twice what the lottery would have paid.
