Why did my cell phone make squelches and breathing noises?

I was talking, and then of a sudden squelches and pauses with a noise that sounded like strange breathing. Freaky!

WHAT WAS THAT, anybody got a recording of this phenomenon?

Probably interference.

Sounds like RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) to me.

Demonic possession is usually a baritone voice ordering you to do bad things.

White noise (or a cell phone’s limited approximation of it, not to get too technical) can sound very much like breathing, and that’s one result of interference. Nothing to worry about, and something that happens with every phone now and then.
