What is the best food you ever ate in a fast food restaurant?

Asked by Earthgirl (11214points) March 8th, 2012

Ok, so I realize that for a lot of people, especially “foodies” the idea of fast food=good food is an impossibility. If that includes you, feel free to refrain from answering. But perhaps, unexpectedly, you had a positive experience at a fast food restaurant when the food far exceeded your expectations, or at least, made you want to go back again. If this is you, please share! For my part, I have to say that at the Weinerwald in Geneva I had some very respectable schnitzel. And I am comparing to the schnitzel I had in Bavaria and Vienna. How about you?

My faulty childhood memory is telling me those old deep-fried-in-lard apple pies from McDonald’s were top notch.

Jack in the Box Chocolate milkshakes were pretty good. They use real ice cream.

It depends on my mood, but there are times when a quarter pounder with cheese meal seems to offer the most perfect instant gratification. It goes down so easily and quickly and all that fat and salt and sugar in the guise of a meal can be just the right thing at certain moments. Of course, those moments are almost always when I am depressed for one reason or another.

Is ice cream considered a food?

I hate pretty much the entire Jack In The Box menu, and was surprised when they starting selling something I really liked. That was the Steak Fajita Pita. They dumped it after about a year.
Carl’s Jr has great shakes, using real ice cream.

This is kind of cheating, but the fast food at the Cornell U Hotel School was always excellent, and cheap. I still go there when I get back to the campus.

Earthgirl's avatar

Adirondackwannabe Did you attend Cornell University? I would have gone there, if I could have afforded it

@Earthgirl I live in NYS so I got the instate tuition. What a great school. I spent the best 4 years of my life there

@tom_g : OMG I was just telling someone the other day that I liked the McD’s fried apple pies better than the more flavorful, low fat pies they have now. KFC’s apple pies are similar to the old McD’s fried pies, if you want to check them out.

I like Wendy’s chili, and their fries are good, as are McD’s. I used to like Wendy’s taco salad, before they revamped it and started putting in less chili and more other crap like they do now.

Roy Rogers had really good fried chicken, and they had peach shakes.

I had an excellent hamburger from a gas station’s cafe and grill once.

Adirondackwannabe Oh well, I am glad you liked it. I’m sure I would have too. I lived in New York too but still couldn’t afford it….I know, I know, waah, waah, waaaaah!!! Seriously though, I think I would have loved Cornell, but my mystery Alma Mater was a very good experience too.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Earthgirl It’s what you make of it. Why do you say mystery Alma Mater?

I went white water rafting one time for an entire day and was completely worn out and starving. We stopped at a Pizza Hut afterwards and that was the best pizza I had ever eaten in my life. Probably due to my hunger and tiredness, but I’ve never had one as good as that one.

Earthgirl's avatar

Adironadackwannabe I’d rather not say where I went…I like my anonymity….

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

GA’s to both of you.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@chyna Where did you go rafting?

chyna's avatar

The New River in WV. It’s wonderful.

I’d do the headwaters of the Hudson on down. It’s beautiful.

I don’t even remember the name of the place, but it was this restaurant in a small town I lived in for about six months when I first got to Québec. They had this special spicy burger, which had spicy meat, and hot peppers in it. Man was that ever a good burger, especially the spicy meat. I’ll always remember it.

Chips (fries) with curry and cheese from a local take away in my home town. Drool.

There’s a local landmark on Revere Beach (near Boston) called Kelly’s Roast Beef.

Their onion rings, fried scallops, chicken fingers, grilled hot dogs, and (of course) roast beef are amazing!!

for years it was just the one location on the beach, now they have a few of them around.

Taco Bell makes this new-ish thing called a Crispy Potato Soft Taco, that’s pretty dang good. I like to think that my years of responding to their surveys brought this about. I always put in the comments section: Please put a few more vegetarian items on your menu, potatoes and mushrooms would be especially good.

I also love Rubios (probably only have them in California) nachos, with peppery beans, guacamole, sour cream and salsa fresca!

And there’s a new burger place out here called Five Guys, that specialize in regular hamburgers onto which they pile on all sorts of extras for free, but they’re kind enough to offer a grilled cheese sort of thing (no meat) but they still pile on all of the extras in including grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. Their French fries are awesome too.

It depends on how you define fast food. If you mean only places like McDonald’s and Burger King, then I don’t have an opinion either way. If your definition includes sub shops and the like, then I could point you to a few cheesesteak places in my city. Many believe Pat’s King of Steaks in Philly invented the cheesesteak and is the best.

Best fast food I’ve ever had was a seafood paella from a kiosk on the beach in Spain. Although I still like McDonalds double sausage and egg breakfast muffin.

Earthgirl's avatar

Bent Oh I could soooooo go for that! Paella at the beach? Good paella? Book me a flight NOW!!! :)

Bent's avatar

@Earthgirl It was really good paella, and it was at a resort on the south coast just east of Malaga. Either Torrox or Nerja: I visited both and can’t remember which one it was.

Earthgirl's avatar

Bent thanks for the details…planning my trip right now and updating my bucket list…

In-N-Out Burger. One of the things I miss about CA.

I remember having some pretty tight kebab from a street kiosk in Prague.

Earthgirl's avatar

Oh! fizzbanger You just reminded me that the best best best gyro I ever ate was in a little place in Stuttgart. They have a large Turkish population there and they know their stuff when it comes to gyros! At least, this place did.
