Nikon Photographers: Can you please recommend me a cheap 50mm lens for a D40?

Asked by whitecarnations (1638points) March 10th, 2012

I think I’m doing it. I’m downgrading from a Canon 60D into the Nikon D40. But I absolutely need a 50mm lens! Any help will do, thanks!

Make sure you get an AF-S lens, if you want to auto-focus to work. Nikon’s own – AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G – is very, very good. The f/1.8 is about half the price of the f/1.4.

Amazon is a great place to use for price comparisons.

By the way, your D40 will take the older and cheaper AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D – note the D instead of G – but you lose the auto-focus ability. Manual focus still works, of course.
