How old should a girl be before being allowed to wear lipstick daily?

Asked by Sunny2 (18842points) March 12th, 2012

Are you surprised to see girls, who look to be 8 or 9 years old, wearing lipstick to school? How do you feel about it?

On the one hand, I don’t want to police my children’s expression. On the other hand, children esp. young girls are increasingly sexualized in our culture. I’d probably compromise sometimes around 13 or 14, if I must.

I honestly don’t know. I imagine for some girls, there is a bit of a natural transition from shimmery lip gloss to actual lipstick at some point. I’ve never worn lipstick on an every day basis, so I don’t know what I would allow my daughter (if I ever have one) to do. I suppose it would depend a lot on her and the color she was wanting to wear.

We gauged our daughter on when her puberty kicked in. Worked okay for us.

I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I was 13 so gave the same rule to my daughter (who is now 14). She played around with makeup a little but she goes au natural most of the time still. I’m glad that she does as she is very beautiful without being all made up.

My daughter is 11 and I bought her some sheer, age-appropriate makeup for this past Christmas. Her lipstick is more like a “lip stain” and she only wears it 3–4 times per week.

But to actually answer your question… I let my 11 year old wear a “lip stain” whenever she wants.

Honestly, I think lipstick looks ridiculous on anyone younger than a freshman in high school, at the very least. I’m a junior in high school and it would look ridiculous on me! Lip gloss, lip balm, and lip stain are fine and can look natural on a younger girl, but lipstick just looks weird and out of place on younger girls.

Well I didn’t find myself wearing make-up until I was sixteen. I wear it a lot now for dance shows, practice, and nice dinners… other than that I barely wear it. I’m almost twenty.

I say let them wear it around 15 or 16. I would also advise that they don’t wear it every day.

My daughter is a few months away from 16, and she doesn’t seem to be all that anxious to wear lipstick or lots of makeup. I think she’s smart. She already has to get up way too early in the morning just to get to school. She stays up too late studying. Losing another half hour of sleep to make-up seems ridiculous.

But she’s wise enough to decide for herself, as far as I’m concerned. I’m glad she places education in front of a lot of other things that trip up a lot of girls these days. She’s trying to figure out overseas volunteer opportunities instead of worrying about boys or make-up. That’s just fine with me.

I would say as young as when middle school starts if she is interested. Something age appropriate.
