What would be the best glue to secure a fake flower to a barrette?

Asked by jca (36062points) March 19th, 2012

I am considering making flower barrettes for my daughter’s upcoming birthday party, as favors. I saw a tutorial on-line, suggesting hot glue gun. I know sometimes with hot glue gun glue, it dries up and becomes brittle. Also, it’s not always the strongest.

What would be the best glue to secure a fake flower to a barrette?

Hot glue—There are different types; check with a hobby store or craft store. Some are flexible.

Good luck and happy crafting.

Hot glue gun. Second that.

Elmer’s if you don’t have a hot glue gun.

gorilla glue.

annewilliams, is correct. Gorilla Glue is the best. Cheapest at WalMart.

Depending on the type of barrette used, I’d go with jewelry wire and hot glue.

It is one of these kind of barrettes @jca?

@SpatzieLover, I was going to go with the hot glue gun answer. I hadn’t thought of the jewelry wire. Perfect idea.

@SpatzieLover: That is one type. There’s probably also the flat, bobby pin style type (flat bobby pins, you know what i mean?).

5 minute epoxy. You can get it at most big boxes and hardware stores.

If you want to avoid a hot glue gun, you might try Tacky Glue, it is the go to crafting glue.

I have these two glues that are supposed to be good, Beacon 527 and some other one with a number in it, like 2000. They’re supposed to be good but they take a few minutes to cure.

E6000 is a very good glue; I’ve only ever used it to glue glass to metal, so I can’t vouch for it under your exact circumstances, but it has worked great for me. You better position it right the first time, though, because it is NOT coming off again.

@Mariah: That’s it, E6000. I’ll do a bunch with the different glues and see which one holds up best.

Won’t it depend as much as anything on what the backing or “stem” or base of the flowers is like? Do they give you anything firm and nonporous to grab onto?

I would either use the wire or @jca I would sew it on to the barrette, then I’d use the glue just to affix it into place. I would not rely on glue alone.

There are so many different kinds of glue on the market, you have to read the label to see what glues to what.

MagnaTac 809 is very strong. I use it on my job for lots of things. It is strong, dries clear and can bond fabric to metal.

I like the wire idea.
