Thoughts on Invisible Children Inc?

Asked by tianalovesyou (711points) March 19th, 2012

So, my leadership class had some fundraising ideas for Kony 2012, but when presented to the headmaster was rejected. He said there was controversy about The Invisible Children. What are your thoughts about the organization?

When you’ve just promised to expose a piece of shit like Koby, it’s a bad time to experiment with Acid and Ecstasy.

@filmfann Just because he was on drugs doesn’t mean we should stop trying to stop Kony. This is a HUGE issue. (If you have kids) how would you like them being kidnapped from your home, handed a gun and told to shoot people? I know if it were my little sister, I would be devestated, to say the least. Somebody has to do something to stop Kony before more people get hurt. Invisible Children is still a great organization whether or not this guy messed up. We’re all human, we all make mistakes.

I think there are many problems far closer to home that I would rather address. Kony is long gone and irrelevant already. There is no need to waste a lot of effort trying to dig him out of the deep jungle. There are far greater problems in Uganda and the Congo as well.

There are issues with poaching. Ivory stealing. Elephant killing. Slave labor in diamond mines. Trafficing in women. Poverty. Lack of education. Oh my god, check out what the UN has to say about what happens in Africa. There are political problems. Problems of lack of democracy. Nations facing all kinds of poverty.

Kony is not a priority. Kony is a marketing gimmick made famous by the question about whether you want your kids to be kidnapped. Sorry. Different problem. Different circumstances. Going after Kony will not deal with a problem that he no longer causes. You want to stop kidnapping, you have to find out who is doing the kidnapping and go after them. If you want to make children safe in Africa, you have to deal with much larger problems. You have to deal with large economic issues. Your five dollar contribution of which 70 percent is spent on other things besides going after Kony is not going to help. Sorry.

Your heart is in the right place, but things aren’t so simple. If you really want to help, educate yourself about Africa. Learn about the Congo. Make money to go visit a village there and work to help them. Join the Peace Corps or a non-governmental organization after you go to college.

But Caveat Emptor. Buyer beware. Educate yourself about the organization first. Beware of emotional appeals. In matters like this, knowledge is crucial. The video misleads people because of its emotional appeal. It does not tell the whole story. Not even close. It spreads ignorance. Not a good thing.

@filmfann

Does anyone know for a facts that Jason, the founder, was definitely doing Acid, Ecstasy or any other kind of drug?

Unless someone has definite proof that this was indeed drug induced, it could just as easily be Manic Psychosis brought on by lack of sleep, exhaustion, and the initial manifestation of bipolar disorder.

If you look carefully at that video, its clear that something is very wrong with him but until more facts are in, I think its cruel to speculate with the assumption that it is from illicit drugs.
