Regular DVD Movies converted for HD Flatscreen TVs?

Asked by ColoradoHermit (14points) March 21st, 2012

Is there something that will convert my regular movie DVD’s so they will show in HD on my new HD Flatscreen TV? Or at least get them to show better? All my DVD Movies look like cr*p on my big flat screen. They look like the regular cable channels do. Is there some way to get them to look like they are on a HD Channel? There’s no way I’m going to replace all my DVD’s with Blu-ray disc. I already have a fortune spent on the dam* DVDs and I ain’t goin to buy them again! It was bad enough replacing the VHS tapes with DVDs, now they want us to replace those with Blu-ray. What are they going to replace those with?

Your TV does that, takes the data on the DVD and expands it. But all it can do is interpolate and clean up the edges. Sorry, basically the answer is no, can’t make up the information that would be the pixels in between the pixels you have on the DVD.
Next stop: 3-D.
Next stop: Holographic.

Oh boy. We are on the same boat here. I have around 400 DVD’s in my collection and just recently set-up my HDTV, Blu-ray and surround system. Just yesterday, I found myself holding a few Blu-Ray discs at Best Buy at bargain prices. And then I realized…what am I doing-?! I’m not going to go through that kind of collecting again-! So I chucked them back to their bins.

I do have a 46 inch Sony Bravia NSX720 LED TV. One reason I chose to buy it is one review said it plays DVDs close to Blu-Ray quality. I still haven’t tried tinkering with it yet. Keeping my fingers crossed. : )

You need to use a DVD or Blu-Ray player that upconverts DVDs to 1080p. That’s the best you can do.

@RocketGuy is right on the money. The ability to upconvert DVD to 1080p is built into most DVD players on the market today, and is present in all Blu-Ray disc players.

No matter the upconversion equipment, nothing will make a DVD look anywhere near as good as native 1080p on Blu-Ray. Nothing.

Were someone to ask my advice, I would not recommend replacing an entire DVD catalog with Blu-Ray equivalents. I have noticed that some studios – notably Disney – will sell you a movie with the Blu-Ray disc, the DVD, and a digital download all in one box. So, if you’re on a DVD today you can watch the movie, and then down the road if you upgrade to Blu-Ray, you’ve got the disc for that, too.
