Why do people drive more like idiots in the morning?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) March 22nd, 2012

Driving in to work today at least 5 drivers did really stupid stuff in front of me. I had people pull out when I’m way too close, turn left in front of me when I’m 30 to 35 feet away (I shit you not on that. I hit the brakes and flipped her the bird. Her kid is in the passenger seat. So I flipped off a 5 year old) and everything else you can imagine. Why are people so stupid in the AM? Is it worse in the AM?

Lol, you give the finger to little kids. XD

I’m guessing that, because a majority of the people in the morning just woke up, they might be less concentrated, a little groggy and whatnot. Some of those folks perhaps have graveyard shifts and are going home, they might feel the same way that the peeps who just woke up do. Just a thought. Some people are morning people, so they might not have any problems…a bus driver has to be epic at all times, for example. But I would personally attribute it it this, at least partly.
Hell, all I have to do is get out of bed in order to cause accidents…

@Symbeline It was bad. I’m driving with my left hand, roads are dry. I’m doing 30 she cuts it that close, I flip the bird and realize I’m going to be able to clear her, and look up at a 5 year old with his mouth open. Think people. Me included.

I think it’s a numbers game.
Put that many people on the road all at the same time and the percentage of idiots will sky rocket. lol
Thank God I do not have a crazy freeway commute in the mornings. I try to stay off the freeways until after 9 am if at all possible. Sometimes I catch the traffic reports and always think to myself ” thank god I am not a daily commuter.” :-/

My driving peeve is when I am coming home late at night on my wild 2 lane hwy. out here in the hills and am the leader of the pack with several cars right on my tail. The speed limit is 45–55 depending and everyone drives 60–65.
Thanks, let me plow into a monster deer which are EVERYWHERE and be dog piled in a fiery crash.

My turn off is also just beyond a dangerous blind curve and I start signaling waaay in advance because people just will NOT slow the frack down! Gah!

@Coloma I’m 30 miles from the nearest interstate. It’s all two laners. This happened at her turn to the school.

This is the problem with ‘anecdotal’ data: ‘since it happened to me once, it must happen to all other people’. Here’s one report that debunks your limited experience: http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/21/car-accident-times-forbeslife-cx_he_0121driving.html

I wonder then, if one refrains from driving on Saturdays and especially in August then do the stats on accidents in the home go up? lol

Hey, I’m being extra safe by not driving on Saturdays, especially in the month of August, but shit… does this means I am more likely to drown in my hot tub on a boring Saturday afternoon? haha

ro_in_motion's avatar

@Coloma Actually, it doesn’t. ;)

When you eliminate one probabilistic event from your life, it doesn’t make the other probabilities higher, it just means you won’t die from that one event.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ro_in_motion You don’t have a clue about my experience.

My first guess would be that everyone is in a rush in the morning, panicking because they’re running late. In the evening, people are eager to get home but there are not as strict time constraints, usually.

Second would be that in the morning, many people may be sleep deprived or just not totally awake yet.

If I were you and someone really did something stupid, I would have been tempted to go into the lot she turned into and pull up next to her and tell her off. I think sometimes people really need to hear it in order to comprehend. I don’t necessarily mean cursing at them, I mean saying “do you know that I almost hit you because you did such and such?” and then seeing where that goes.

ro_in_motion's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I didn’t mean that in a derogatory way. All anecdotal evidence is based on limited information. I was comparing your experience to the set of information of ‘all drivinf records’. Whether it’s your data or mine, it’s limited.

Again, no offense meant.

Ok that’s fine. My apology. That’s a shitty welcome to fluther. Welcome to fluther.

@Adirondackwannabe Thanks – I need to be more careful with my answers. :)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

No: You don’t need to be more careful. I need to be more mellow. My bad, not your’s

Meh..when you get a bunch of zippy, bright peeps all gathered together there is bound to be a few sparks flying now and then. It’s all in the catch, and most of us are humble enough to take our lumps when needed. I happen to love zippy personalities, much better than the potato under the sink types. lol

Personally, I think it’s Thursdays that are the worst for driving. People are all revved up waiting for the weekend, and they drive like lunatics. It’s always on Thursdays. I’m tellin’ ya.

I actually think some people just drive like idiots… period. You may have come across five in a row in the morning but those people are crappy drivers whenever they are on the road. I doubt they just exhibit their bad driving in the morning. The unfortunate thing is they probably think they are really good drivers. I see them in the morning, the evening and during the day. They are particularly scary when they are driving a huge truck and doing way over the speed limit.

Late for work?

ro_in_motion's avatar

@Bellatrix A friend once told me: ‘I just realised that driving might be the most complicated thing a person has learned’. This really changed my approach to driving.

tom_g's avatar

Because they are delusional sociopaths.

SpatzieLover's avatar

It’s all in one’s perception. IMO, it sounds like someone needs to employ a catastrophe scale and possibly leave the house five minutes earlier for the morning commute.

Paradox25's avatar

Probably from hitting the snooze button too frequently and then hurrying like a madman so they aren’t late for work.
