Whats the difference between Pepsi and Coca Cola? Don't they taste the same?

Asked by happy123 (143points) March 24th, 2012

It’s kind of embarrassing to ask, but its a real question. I really can’t tell them apart. I hear people say “Pepsi is better” and another person say ” Coca Cola is better”. And sadly i’m the confused one and says ” Don’t they taste the same?”. So now, I want to know what is the difference between them.

They’re both disgusting to drink, that’s for sure!

Never liked pepsi’s amalgam aftertaste.
I have not drunken any type of cola for years.
But when I did, I preferred Vita Cola.

To me, Pepsi is the more sweeter (sugary) one of the two.
In my teens I would not drink other than Pepsi, but in the years after that I changed to Coca.
More ‘mature’ taste.

They don’t taste the same to me.

The distinction matters only to those who notice it, I guess. If they taste the same to you, go ahead and enjoy them both equally.

[Edit] I am also one of those who remember ‘old’ Coke, ‘real’ coke—and that really did taste different. I miss it. Now if I drink any soft drink, it’ll be Royal Crown’s diet version, the stupidly named Diet Rite, if I can get it, and otherwise Diet Coke. Which doesn’t pretend to be anything real and doesn’t taste like it. Contest over: everybody loses.

They taste the same to me. I think it’s all the power of suggestion.

I think Pepsi is sweeter and has a syrupy aftertaste.

@bkcunningham
only if syrup tastes like tooth fillings

I used to like Royal Crown and then I preferred Diet Pepsi. Why the change? I’ve no idea. Now I don’t care for any of them. I’ve switched to water which I didn’t used to like at all. Flavors change. Tastes change. @happy123, you’ll just have to decide for yourself which, if any, you like.

One’s the “real thing” & the other, well….....isn’t.

I haven’t drank soft drinks in over a year, but I always preferred Coke. Pepsi always tasted more sickly sweet to me and I didn’t like it. I’ve even been subjected to the blind taste test, and I could still tell the difference, so it’s hardly the power of suggestion at work, at least for me.

I don’t really like soda, but they do taste slightly different and I would definitely choose Pepsi over coke. I have read up a bit on the subject and this is the main difference, Coke has more vanilla-like flavoring agent added to it and Pepsi has more citrus flavoring agent added to it, otherwise the ingredients are almost identical.

I no longer drink soda. When I did I only drank Pepsi products. Pepsi, Coke and all other colas I’ve tasted have a distinct taste. I never thought they tasted the same. I recall doing a taste test in Econ. Almost everyone in the class knew which cola was which.

I like Diet Rite. It tastes like old-fashioned cola to me.

Pepsi and Coke don’t taste the same though. Pepsi has a harsher aftertaste. Coke is sweeter.

Why does this confuse you and make you sad? That’s a more interesting question to me. I can drink the diet version of either. I just read that both are changing their recipe to keep from having to add a cancer warning to their label. Have another soda!!

Not only do they taste very different, they even smell different. I have been given Pepsi or Diet Pepsi unawares and knew immediately it wasn’t Coke/Diet Coke.

Coke is slightly more tart than Pepsi. This sounds nuts, I know, but Pepsi tastes more ‘round’ and Coke tastes more ‘angular.’

When I used to drink cola pretty much exclusively, I could definitely taste the difference. I drank Coke and shunned Pepsi. Now that I haven’t had dark soda regularly in years, I might not be able tell them apart.

I drink Sprite Zero these days, and can easily tell the difference between that and say, a diet Sierra Mist or 7-Up.

I also have to agree that Pepsi is more sweeter and syrupy. Does anyone think it also goes flat faster?
