Is there a way to prevent an unlisted YouTube video from being shared on a social site?

Asked by metadog (378points) March 27th, 2012

Hi! I have been asked to put a video from a company event up on YouTube so that it can be placed on a hidden sub page of my company’s site. The video is “unlisted.” The concern, then is that the video could be then shared on Facebook or Twitter. Is there a way to prevent the social sharing of YouTube videos?

No, there is no way to prevent videos from being shared through social networks. It would of undermine Youtube’s business model if it allowed that. The best you can do is restrict it from being embedded on a webpage, or restrict it to computer only (no phones, TV devices).

If the videos are that business sensitive to the company, then it really should be hosted on the company’s own servers. Positing it to a video sharing site is just too risky if confidential info is concerned.

Read the links above.

You could post the video on Youtube as “private” instead of “unlisted.” You can specify who you want to view the video.
