When you get a record deal, do you also get a music producer?

Asked by Mandeblind (425points) March 28th, 2012 from iPhone

If you have a band that is signed by Sony, for instance. Would you have to do all the music yourself as a band, or would a producer help you arrange, etc.?

Most groups use a producer I think. Paul Schaffer (David Letterman’s band leader) does a lot of it as does Todd Rundgren. Just two that came to mind quickly. Oh also Mutt Lang. I think the producer is not tied to the label but I’m not sure on that.

It depends on how your recording contract is structured.

“An in-house producer works at a particular studio and the fees for his services are part and parcel of the fees paid for the studio rental.

Freelance or independent producers are hired directly by the performers, their record label or management and are not tied to any particular studio. They may be hired because of their affinity for a particular music genre or even because of the credibility their name lends to a project.”
