What would make an idiot try to pass three cars in a 300 foot no passing zone with no visibility?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) March 28th, 2012

I crested a hill tonight just before my house heading into a little dip in the road. There’s a SUV trying to pass a line of three cars. I also have a SUV following me a little closely. I seriously figured it was over. What would make an idiot try that? There is no way he can clear the third car before the crest of the hill. Why would anyone try anything like that?

The combination of frustration and a winding 2 lane road with old Mrs. McKeever driving her Ford 15 mph below the speed limit because she can’t see too well in the dark.

Oh, and a driver showing off to his girlfriend. Hopefully she dumps him.

@LuckyGuy I think there was another guy in the SUV. I was too busy dumping speed and getting to the right to look close. I think the second car did the same and saved our ass. The ditch to the right had a huge culvert. Not good.

Best thing to do in a situation like that is pull over to the curb and turn on you emergency flasher. You will be out of his danger zone and other people will see your flashers and be extra defensive in their driving.

He was probably late for picking up his date, Who knows?

@john65pennington I’m six miles out of the city, doing 50 to 55mph. It’s a narrow 2 lane road, he’s doing 60 to 65. The closing rate was scary fast. He’s 250 feet away when I crest the hill.

@Adirondackwannabe that is when you engage him with the M242 25mm chain gun.

Sounds like the drunk we had here over the weekend, took out an SUV and killed a 9yo little girl.

@WestRiverrat I would have loved that. I was to busy trying to save our lives. I can now say I think I know what goes through the mind of people killed in crashes. It was bad.

When you ask “How stupid are you”, the answer seems to be; “How stupid is there?”
@john65pennington, we don’t have the option to pull over where I live, the road absolutely just ends on either side with the “pavement” (and I use the word “pavement” in its loosest possible sense). Getting over to the right along a large portion of the roads here ‘bouts would resuld in a roll down a ravine. There is literally no place to go.

@Trillian Pulling over was my worst option right there. We’re out in the country. The shoulder was gravel. And there was a huge pipe that would destroy the right side of the car. I know the feeling.

Yep…. where are the flying cars? The ones with remote shut down and cushions of polymerized air? Damn you George Jetson!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I love the idea of flying cars. Cool.

WestRiverrat's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I have had to clean up after too many flying cars, I hate them. 19 year olds, high speeds, deer and road approaches don’t make for easy cleanup.

He was trying to get home before his dad found out he had “borrowed” his dad’s car. I hope he made it.

Where are the cops at a time like that? That’s what I always think. I know, I know, the cops can’t be everywhere all the time!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@jca We usually have 5 deputies and 2 state police on the road at any one time. Our county has 10 to 12 towns covering a pretty good sized area. They’d get there to take pictures maybe.
