What do you think Barack Obama's joining Pinterest will do for the site's popularity, acceptance and legitimacy?

Asked by jca (36062points) March 30th, 2012

I joined Pinterest a few months ago. Since that time I have really become inspired by the various photos and ideas I’ve seen on it. I have also seen, on other internet sites, posts about Pinterest’s possible legal issues that may arise from people “pinning” and copying photos from other sites, which is how Pinterest works.

I saw on the news today that Barack Obama joined and has done some pinning.

What do you think the President’s joining of Pinterest will do to its popularity and acceptance?

More people will definitely join it so they can try to contact or interact with him in some way. More people are on online communities, so he’ll appear hip and cool to the younger generation.

Does anyone actually believe it is Obama, and not one of his staffers? People are so naive about this stuff.

Not much. I don’t think it’s the lack of Obama (or other public figures) using pintrest that holds it back, it’s the overwhelming amount of wedding and baby stuff, and then the overwhelming lack of other things.

But upside? I will now be able to find out what wedding cakes Obama’s staffers think are the best.

@Aethelflaed: Maybe you are following people who look at a lot of wedding and baby stuff. If you click on “Everything” you’ll see a big variety of stuff: crafts, vintage, decorating, travel, food, etc. I see very little wedding and baby stuff, probably due to what my friends’ interests are.

You can friend him on FB. He is always popping up in my “wanna be friends with?” list. Good campaign 2.0 skills on that team.
I don’t even know what Pinterest is. Who needs it if I have fluther, flickr, and facebook? and linkedin and a few professional sites . . .

@anartist: Pinterest is a site that you should just take a look at to understand better. It’s like a virtual bulletin board. A bunch of Jellies are on it. The way you might post photos on a bulletin board, you would “pin” photos on various boards you created, and your followers can see them and repin if they like them. You create the boards, topics and titles you choose. For example, decorating ideas, party ideas, gardening, food ideas. It’s very inspiring.

I don’t see any account that looks official for PBO. I see a couple that are obvious fakes, and I see an account for Obama-Biden campaign that looks legit.

@GoldieAV16: I didn’t see it but they said on the news that he joined, and showed some of his pins. They showed the actual page.
