Can you help me find the name of a book?

Asked by abysmalbeauty (2739points) April 4th, 2012

My Dr was telling me about a book that sounded really interesting and I would like to read it the problem is I was half asleep and I cant remember the title for the life of me! What we were discussing is codependency and realizing that you need not be what you are “expected to be”; living your life in a way that you will move towards what you envision your life being one day; and the idea that once you have the knowledge that allows you to be independent you will become invisible to the people who try to pull you back into your old way of life.

Atlas Shrugged. You have an insightful doctor.

Are you my Dr @josie we did also talk about atlas shrugged in addition to the book I am looking for

@abysmalbeauty Clearly I am not your Dr but read it anyway. What you described is what it is all about. That is also the reason some people hate it. But they are often the ones who do not want to put forth the effort to improve themselves. You apparently do want to. Good for you! Don’t hesitate

Could it be “Codependent No More?” Author is Melody Beattie.

Surely the easiest thing would be to ask the doctor—?

@josie thanks I will certainly do so! Barnes and Noble here I come!

@jca unfortunately not

@Jeruba that is an option, not sure he’ll remember though but perhaps tomorrow ill run into him!

@jca might be right. I was suggested that book awhile ago. Although I didn’t read it, it sounds like that was the basis of it.

Atlas Shrugged (and everything else by Rand) is a turgid, insipid, leadenly-paced Mary Sue screed by a screechy, hypocritical harridan in defence of greed and sociopathy. I can assure you that you will find nothing inside which has value beyond kindling.

A far more likely source for what you want would be: Jonathan Livingston Seagull or Illusions by Richard Bach, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Persig, or even Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche for a more egoist perspective.

@abysmalbeauty: Will you let us know when you find out the name of it, so we know?

@SmashTheState Thank you for the other suggestions I may pick them up as well! I have read mixed reviews on Atlas but I’d like to make the decision on my own so I did pick it up today :)

@jca I will absolutely do that
