What does it mean to "follow" another user on Fluther?

Asked by Bent (1767points) April 9th, 2012

I have “followed” three people, and five are following me, but I cannot find what this actually does in practical terms. Is there a page somewhere showing the activity of people I’m following?** Should I get notified when they answer questions? Or is it solely to make a list on my profile?

** If this doesn’t exist yet, I think it should. I’d love to be able to see, all in one place, a list of links to answers made by people I follow.

A belated welcome to Fluther!

By choosing to follow someone, it awards them two Lurve points, thus increasing your overall score. If you click on the “Just For You” near the top of the page, there is a tab called, “From People You Follow”. It shows a list of questions that they have asked from most recent to oldest. Note that this isn’t a list of answers from the Jellies you are following. For that, you would have to go to their profile. Even then, if they have their profile restricted, you won’t be able to peruse all of their answers.

I’m not aware of any additional benefits/features, other than a figurative nod to a fellow Jelly that you respect them enough to add them to your profile.

As @Pied_Pfeffer has pointed out, you can see questions of people you follow, but not answers. I think a page of answers would rapidly become too humungous to be of much practical use.

@Pied_Pfeffer I’ve been here since 2008 and didn’t know about the “From People you Follow” button. Thanks for sharing!

Basically following somebody (or vice versa) on here is just fluther speak for friends, fans, etc such as with other Q&A sites. People get awarded 2 points of lurve for choosing to follow somebody, as well as the person being followed. You can follow their questions too. Fluther didn’t always use the following/followed feature but instead used to just refer to somebody being added to another’s fluther. It’s still the same thing though.

I follow people who follow me, as a general rule. It means they reached out to give me two lurve points as a kindness.

I also follow the occasional new user, who does not have a lot of followers, as a means to encourage them to return. A couple of folks have given me wonderfully insightful answers, and I have not seen them before or since. I want to make them feel appreciated in hopes they will contribute more.

You stalk them. Don’t forget the chocolate. Preferably dark.
