Have you ever been to a cow beauty contest?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) April 14th, 2012

I was trying to explain dairy cattle judging to a friend today and I think I blew their mind. It’s a big time thing in agriculture. They have contests where they look at all aspects of a group of cows or calves and pick the prettiest. And there are big bucks for the winner. Ever been to one?

Yep, at the North Carolina State Fair. (Cattle are big in NC.)

I’ve been to several. They have them at the Delaware State Fair every year and they had them at the Farm Show I went to a few months ago in PA.

No, but it sounds like my kind of thing. Is there an age limit for entrants? What’s the biggest prize? I may have a chance.

Not for dairy cattle. Around here it is beef, goats or hogs. For a prize winning angus bull, the difference can be $100,000+ a straw. Each straw can artificially inseminate several cows. The actual prize for an event is often the least of the incentive to enter bulls.

We have a wonderful three-day fair over Labor Day. People come from far and while and from around the corner.

There are cow beauty contests, sheep shearing contests, drag races, fierce competition for the best hay ricks and the best maple syrup, the parade of the antique fire engines, the cheer leaders and enough strawberry jam to blanket my property.

Yes and I always get a kick out of them describing this huge creature as being very feminine. I know a bloke who breeds Blondes, they are massive and he shows them regularly. I show dogs and we use a lot of the same tactics. I love to watch.

Sure, at the fair.

No. Why would I? They are all hideous.

Yes. I was born and raised in rural Lincolnshire, where dairy cattle are big business. I would go to the county agricultural shows mainly for the horse events but the other animals were fun to watch too. Pigs were the funniest, they would always try to escape.

Not likely.

Yep. At various State Fairs.

Herefords are gorgeous imo

No, they already have humans and occasionally dogs for those.

I’ve seen it at the state fair. I just love the state fair but lately it hasn’t been that great, a little disappointing. It was funny yesterday I had a flashback to the fair! I was walking around Queens and there were 3 roosters wandering around pecking in the grass and meandering down the sidewalk! Escapees!! I hope they got home ok.
