How difficult is it to get black hair dye out of hair?

Asked by partyrock (3870points) May 4th, 2012

Just a question for anyone who knows about hair dye, how difficult would it be to get black hair dye out of someone’s hair? Is it best to bleach it? Go to a salon to have it professionally taken out? Is the hair going to be super damaged? Thanks

From what I understand black and red are the hardest colours to get out. The best course of action would be to go to a salon and see what they can do. Or, you just grin and bear it until it grows out.

very..if you need to get it completely out without waiting for it to grow out ..dont put it in there in the first place.

It’s very difficult. If you feel that you must get it out, definitely go to a salon. Do not try to bleach it yourself as this can result in significant damage (i.e. breakage) and can cause your hair to turn an odd color, especially if the dye job was recent. A professional colorist would know what to recommend in this situation.

In the future, if you’re not sure about a color, I suggest trying a semi-permanent or temporary dye that washes out over time.

Not difficult. Just shave your hair off. When it grows back, it will be free of dye.

@partyrock Somehow, I don’t think that’s what you were hoping for. :-)

@wundayatta – lol haha, no worries. Probably won’t shave my hair off, but I will need to go to a salon to get it taken out, then chop like 3 inches worth of hair on the bottom. Lesson learned.

A professional salon can lift the black. I have had it done before (damn the do-it-at-home boxed hair color). Don’t wait for it to grow out. Life is too short to waste a year looking like Elvira.

@Skaggfacemutt -How much of the black were they able to lift out?

They were able to bring it back to my normal brown. Actually, they can keep going and bring it as far up as you want. It is a little hard on the hair, but not terrible.
