General Question

Can someone help me identify this bird from Massachusetts?

Asked by bluejay (1014points) May 7th, 2012

It is a medium sized bird. About the size of a dove or pigeon. It is light brown in the front and darker on the wings. The feathers almost all have a black semi circle on them. For now this all the information I have because it’s sleeping right now, and I don’t want to disturb it. I know it’s not much, but I will update tomorrow.

Oh and it’s beak is about an inch long and thin. It’s also straight.

Can you take a photo of it? That would be really helpful.

I can take a photo, but it wouldn’t help because I can’t upload it!

Might be a Banded Pigeon? Large woodland Pigeons that look like large Pigeons with a banded tail. Look up banded Pigeons and report back.

@Coloma No that’s not it. It’s all brown and black with no other color to it.

Cowbird? either male or female.

Maybe someone’s escaped pet dove?

Who keeps doves? We have lots of mourning doves here (in rural upstate NY) and they are grey and light brown.

Mourning dove

I think Gail might have nailed it, brown and black says Cowbird to me.

@bluejay Check this visual list of Massachusetts birds and see if the critter is on it.

Cowbirds don’t have thin beaks though. And OP said the feathers have a black semicircle… also the size of a dove or pigeon. Here’s a juvenile mourning dove; looks quite a bit different from the adult.
@gailcalled Lots of people, apparently;-)

@ccrow Right you are, I forgot the beak ID as a clue. My birding skills are rusty after not practicing much the last decade.

It may be a juvenile Starling making the change to adult or a Grackle

Thanks all. It was in fact a mourning dove… I think a young one. It had an injured wing and could barely fly, but today it ended up flying out the window.

@bluejay I’m glad the story has a happy ending. I hate seeing wild animals injured or lame.
