What is wrong with my computer?

Asked by bluejay (1014points) May 19th, 2012

The internet connection is failing. It turns on and off as it pleases and is off more than on. I’ve tried reconnecting it, and troubleshoot. It says the connection is 4 bars, but when it fails it says no access.

Could you clarify? What do you mean exactly by “reconnecting it?” What exactly are you disconnecting and then reconnecting?

Specifics are important.
I assume this is a laptop with a wireless modem. If there are other computers hooked up to the same router, are they working without issue?

The internet connection is disconnecting and reconnecting.

Yeah the other computers on the same connection are working just fine.

Does it happen if you sit next to the router?

What have to tried so far? What is it that you are disconnecting and reconnecting? What troubleshooting have you done? If your modem has reset button have you reset it? If it doesn’t have a reset button have you unplugged the modem, powered it down, and the plugged it back in?

Periodically, particularly after dark on rainy and cold and damp nights, my modem needs to be recycled and recycled and recycled. Unplug it for 30 seconds and then reconnect and wait and wait and wait.

I have DSL and live about 3 miles from whatever generates it. A huge pain.

Use a lan cable to connect your laptop to the router.
If it runs fine, the problem is either with the router broadcast or the computers wireless modem.
Are the other computers also wireless?

When my router overheats I lose WiFi, but the wired connection keeps working. Is your router somewhere with poor air circulation?

You say the other computers on the connection work fine, but are they wired or wifi? Generally, when either my laptop or tablet cannot connect, neither of them will, regardless of the connection status of my desktop rig; the wifi is either working fine or not at all.

Another possibility is that the credentials got messed up. Is rare, but there have been a few times where I had to tell Windows to forget my network and then enter the password again.

I have never had to reset my modem, but my router seems to need to be power-cycled about once a month or so; have you turned your router off then back on? Don’t use the reset button; that causes it to forget everything!
