How can I cure my fear of the jump?

Asked by mrlaconic (3990points) May 20th, 2012

For the past several years I have wanted to go sky diving and/or bungee jumping but I am scared. My fear is not the falling (I am looking forward to that) but rather the jump or push out of the plane / off the bridge.

I know that’s what it is because I can’t jump off of anything much higher than a foot (even if I can see the ground I still have to find another way to slide off or climb down.

I do not know where this fear come from but I need to get over it.

It’s instinct to be afraid. You can’t “cure” it without just doing it.

Do you think you could do tandem skydiving where someone else sort of takes the first step for you?

Right @Dutchess_III You just have to DO it!
No amount of mental self pep talk babble is going to replace the actual act of just closing your eyes and jumping.
I went up in a hot air balloon a few years ago and it was terrifying for the first few minutes, but once we ascended to about 3000 feet and floated around for an hour it was the MOST EXHILARATING experience ever! As soon as we landed I wanted to do it again!

That is exactly what will happen, after you face your fear you’ll become a junkie for repeating the experience.

Arrange for someone to give you a shove.

I’ve done it. More than once. Trust your training (which should thoroughly cover aerodynamics, technique and the equipment) , trust your equipment (that your training has allowed you to properly inspect), trust yourself (whom else are you going to trust) , and jump. It is one of those things that once you have done it there are about 100 things in life that you will never fear again.

Before you will be allowed to jump from the plane, you’ll have to take ground training, which will involve some level of “jumping”.

I believe that you can arrange to make your first jump from the plane with a dual harness, where an instructor will make the actual moves out of the plane. But I doubt if any reputable jump company will ever “push” you from the plane. Think of the liability issues they’d face if anything happened to go wrong on that jump!

Just go. You can’t legally jump out of a plane without ground school- you’ll have to jump off a tower before out of a plane. When you go up, you have a certain amount of seconds to jump to land on your target. You get three go arounds, depending on pilot. Most companies make you jump tandem with an instructor before you go solo, so go. It’ll be ok
