Is mixing of races really an ideal solution?

Asked by Charles (4823points) May 26th, 2012

A Puerto Rican woman I read about made the statement that when her grandchildren were grown, the races would be so mixed from interracial marriages that there would no longer be easily identifiable races but everyone would be a light brown color.
Across the US, the typical African/American is a totally different complexion than the recent immigrants that come from countries like Chad, Somalia, Nigeria etc. Those recent immigrants are a pure racial strain as a rule. The typical African/American that is a descendant of slaves has mixed blood for the most part. Japan is a good example of a population with little racial mixing.

If the US or the world loses that “uniqueness” of racial purity it will be lost forever.

Compare the variety of the human races to a field full of flowers. Would we appreciate flowers nearly as much if they were all one color? Can the analogy can be made with the Human Races?

WTF? You can’t be serious with this.

As if race existed outside of our social constructs. The blending of different genes makes for a stronger human and a larger gene pool.

We don’t fall in love with flowers. And yes, the field would still be amazing.

@Charles what, exactly, would the world lose if there were no more races? Race, pretty much, is only skin deep. What value does it add to the species? Nothing really, in my opinion, and has been, and continues to be, a source of a lot of conflict and difficulty among humans.

And as to the flower analogy, I also doubt that we would appreciate them as much if one group of flowers tried to keep other groups of flowers from blooming and the flowers couldn’t get along and called each other ugly, hateful botanical slurs and epithets.

@lillycoyote That’s really nice.GA

Um, @Charles, are there actual races of Chadian, Somalian and Nigerian people? Do you believe that? Or do you perhaps believe that if you’ve seen, say, one person from Chad and one person from Somalia and one or two from Nigeria that these are somehow “representative of the purity of their race”? Or do you really not know that some of the tribal differences in Africa – since you seem so enamored of African racial purity – were what led to and supported a lot of the black slave trade for centuries.

For that matter, what’s the great glory in “racial purity” of any kind? And for another, what race is “Puerto Rican”, hmm?

I don’t know that “mixing of races” is a solution to anything. Solution to what? I wonder. But what’s the harm in it? Frankly, I think a little less tribalism would be a good thing. This question seems a good indicator of that.

“Racial purity” is one of the worst concepts ever. I don’t get it at all. That’s what Hitler wanted. If the people’s skin color changed through generations, what would it matter? So does their hair color, the length of their arms etc. The only thing that could get ‘lost’ is one specific color, maybe. Let’s say there are no more ‘white’ people, then people could just paint themselves white or if there were no more ‘black’ people, then people could just go out in the sun and get a really unhealthy tan. No seriously, this question’s existence seems strange. I don’t know who ever invented races, but it makes no sense. People are people and love is love and people should make people with whomever they want to make people with.

Race is irrelevant and based on nothing more than superficial outer appearance.

UCSB should refund your tuition.

It is never going to be ALL anyway. We have so much diversity on our planet that we will never have to worry about attaining ONE skin color globally. And since the invasion of the white man on this continent, racial purity was not in the cards.

@FutureMemory As an alum of UCSB, I think it shows some people can go to an excellent school and not learn anything.

The elimination of obvious race differences such as skin color would simply mean we’d have to take the time to know someone before we decide to hate them. ~

I’m not a racist, but I want to keep the Aryan race pure. We must secure the something something for white children.

Hey have you heard of National Socialism? It’s got some pretty swell ideas, but a certain Austrian painter ruined it for everyone. He also ruined the Charlie Chaplin mustache.

We are all African now A really interesting, informative article about the Genographic Project undertaken by National Geographic. It talks about about adaptation, shuffling of the human genome, race and diversity.

@Earthgirl: I think they do DNA testing for $99. I want to get mine done there.

Earthgirl's avatar

jca Your right! That sounds like a really cool idea. Here is the link to buy the kit for testing.

@Earthgirl: I just googled DNA testing last night and was brought there. I would love to get my daughter’s brother’s done, and I would like to get mine done. I have to research the two or three types first and then go for it.

Of course the world would lose. I love diversity and people from different parts of the world are different, let’s celebrate it not deny it. We should aim to eliminate intolerance not skin colour.

@Charles would be curious to know if you find the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity as valuable as you find the the notion of preserving “racial” diversity. “Race” is really a meaningless concept, it really is only skin deep. But cultural diversity; that means something; if that goes it really would be a loss.

I suppose I shouldn’t make generalizations here, somehow, I get the feeling that people who believe in preserving “racial” diversity, something that is really meaningless, aren’t quite so supportive of the idea of preserving cultural diversity, something that actually has meaning and value.

Should any of the subcultures that exist in the U.S. assimilate and subjugate their own cultures under mainstream U.S. culture? When people emigrate, from other parts of the world, to the U.S. and Canada, your examples, should they be expected to assimilate completely, in terms of their language, culture and heritage? Is cultural diversity worth preserving? It seems more worth preserving than racial diversity, to me at least.

What African Americans, Asians, etc. and other “races” have contributed to this country is not a matter of race or skin color or physical characteristics, it is a matter of their actual, real contributions and their cultural contributions. Again, what exactly, what value does “race” add, in any real way, that might make is something worth preserving?
