How do I troubleshoot my internet connection in Windows XP?

Asked by thammerlund (1points) June 29th, 2007

I tried installing a USB mouse when my computer was off. When I turned it on, my computer wouldn't work until I unplugged the mouse. When the computer started I plugged in the mouse again and Windows made that annoying error noise. I then turned the computer off, plugged in my original mouse, but now I can't use the internet. Any suggestions?

The computer wouldn't work with the mouse plugged in? Can you clarify this statement?

Secondly, how are you connected to the internet (wireless or wired?)

When the USB mouse was in, the computer power didn't work. I unplugged it and the thing turned on. I've never seen anything like it.

I have ADSL.

UPDATE: I turned my computer off after an hour on the phone with my ISP and when I came back home a few minutes ago the computer was working fine. Maybe it's time for a new computer.

I would be inclined to say the same thing.

Do other USB things work in that port?

Yeah, the USB port works fine. The mouse doesn't work in any computer I have though.

Maybe the mouse caused some kind of power leak that prevented the modem from getting enough power to run? I've never heard of anything like that, but it doesn't seem farfetched

Well, I built the computer myself so anything is possible.

If I got a new one, do you think I could get by with just a new hard drive, or do you think it's best to redo everything?
