Is American Military University a respectable institution?

Asked by whiteliondreams (1717points) June 13th, 2012

I am enrolled in AMU and pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy. Is attaining a degree from an online college or university as respectable or reputable as one from a campus? I understand that online college isn’t as reputable in the professional and academic level, but if I could compare them here, I would like some help.

I am not an expert on the matter but, for now, online universities aren’t seen as credible as ones that you attend. This is changing, however. Many universities are offering coursework online and as long as they are still giving you their name, it should be okay. I haven’t heard of AMU and know little about military academic institutions. Are there peers who are doing the same you can ask?

I have never heard of them before, and just checked to see if they were even accredited (they are). But online schools don’t have a strong reputation and are not considered as strenuous as a traditional school.

Never heard of AMU. I don’t know where it is.

I have little respect for online universities. As far as I can tell they are more concerned with profit than academics. I don’t even know if they sponsor research. As far as I can tell, a virtual university is to a real university as a virtual relationship is to a real relationship.

@wundayatta I’d venture to say many institutions regardless of location are only concerned with profit than academics.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I don’t have anyone I can really contact about this matter. I wanted to ask the mass here to see what I get. I have been working considerably hard with online work and it is strenuous to do so online because of the difficulty communicating effectively. The coursework is great though and I have learned plenty from attending this “University”. I am fortunate enough to choose my instructor and I have been trying to choose those with Masters or Doctorates. I’ve had to settle for maybe 2 with Bachelors, but they held multiple in different disciplines. I learned that the quality of teacher is what guides your educational goals. Ie. You learn from a Master you get somewhat a masters perspective, you learn from a PhD and you get a doctoral perspective in your education. What do you think?

I just learned that my school is accredited under the same standards and organization as Ohio State University and many others under the Higher Learning Commission. I am already aware that there are campuses in West Virginia, I just wanted to be sure that I wasn’t wasting money by going to a school that wasn’t worth it.

@whiteliondreams I don’t think that’s necessarily true – I have a Master’s and am working on a PhD, yet I teach in the same way….one’s degrees don’t determine how good an instructor they are.

@whiteliondreams I very rarely link to Yahoo! Answers to answer a question, but this is the rare exception.

If your interest is in learning philosophy, then you can be the judge of how well they are performing. How corporate personnel managers react to an online degree is probably a non-issue, because you probably aren’t studying philosophy in hopes of landing a cushy corporate job anyway.

@ETpro Thanks! @Simone_De_Beauvoir Interestingly, you are teaching in one way now and you will never notice the small changes you make to produce a more effective educational experience. I can guarantee that you have students you have taught differently and each semester something changes. Your experience here is changing you and you don’t see it because it is your own self that you are looking at. I wouldn’t doubt your extraordinary intelligence in academia and I would only hope that you would want to share it with your students and peers. So I hope at least.

@whiteliondreams You’re welcome, and you’re also right that life changes us all. I’ve seen it subtly change @Simone_De_Beauvoir and I’m guessing she may say the same about me. But there is nothing that precludes our recognizing change. I know that FLuther has changed me. I know at least some of the changes. I just can’t know ir I know them all.
