How can I clean my SD card slot?

Asked by bookish1 (13159points) July 10th, 2012

I almost had a heart attack this morning when I was trying to upload 200 photographed documents from my camera’s SD card. My computer wasn’t reading the card, although my camera still could.

I figured out it was because the SD card slot on my mac is dusty as all hell. I haven’t used it until this summer.

Keeping in mind that I am a broke traveling student eating two meals a day, can anyone please suggest a good way to get some of the dust out of there?

Do you have a vacuum cleaner around ? There is some static risk using a vacuum, and there are some specialized vacuums made to minimize that, but a household vacuum can work and peripheral slots are designed to take more static abuse than say the motherboard.
Turn all the power off on the machine and unplug it or if it’s a laptop take out the battery before vacuuming.

@dabbler, thanks a bunch. I think there’s even a vacuum with a hose attachment around here. I’ll give it a try!
