If you woke up in the middle of a forest at noon standing on a road that split into two routes, would you go right or left?

Asked by digitalimpression (9915points) July 12th, 2012

More details for this scenario:
– Both routes look identical
– The road behind you leads to a massive impassable cliff
– You can see no mountains or significant land features
– In your pockets you have nothing but a small pocket knife
– You are wearing an Arctic Tundra Winter outfit, complete with snow boots and a furry hood
– It is 80 degrees without a cloud in the sky

What would you do? What steps would you take? What are your reasons for doing so?

Usually, being right handed, I would tend to choose to go right. Probably removing the outerware, reserving it to cannibalize for what I need.

When was the last time I ate?

And why the heck am I wearing a tundra outfit in 80 degree weather? With a hood?

Because of what @majorrich said, I use that logic in parking, that most people are right handed and park on the right if given a choice of equal parking spots on the right and left. So given that, I always choose the left and would in your scenario.

I’d go left. What the heck, there will be less people that way. Plus I can hit on chyna if I go that route.

I will not choose based on my handedness, but on my political orientation.
So I will make three right turns.

Left, for this is the direction my resting penis lays & it’s never let me down yet.

I’d go right. That’s what I always do in RPGs. Regardless of whether they are American or Japanese!

Well, first I would strip down to get comfortable in the heat. Seeing as I was dressed for the artic cold that must be where I am from or was heading. So my first inclination would be to take the path that is heading north. To determine that I would need to know which way is north. You can do this employing the shadows from the sun. Once I figure out which was North is I will take that path.

I’d curl up into a fetal position right there at the fork and weep.

I think I’d go left and try to find something to eat.

I’d climb a tree and see what was ahead in either direction.

What’s the point of the details if they have no bearing on the outcome at all, since it is merely a flip of the coin decision?

Shuck (but keep) the cold weather gear, good for shelter, starting fires, signaling, carrying stuff, impromptu bandages, barter, etc. I would go left, reasoning that a road had places on both ends and because I remember reading something about going left in a labyrinth, which is completely unrelated but is the only advice that I have that I can apply to the situation.
Then I wait for passing motorists.

digitalimpression's avatar

@nonexpert They actually do have a bearing on the outcome. I’d bet you’re the one that wouldn’t survive this scenario. XD

@Nullo I think I’ve heard the labyrinth rule too. I can’t remember why that rules exists now though. It seems you could end up going in a circle. =)

@nonexpert You may find the Infocom game, Zork: The Underground Empire, insightful (if unrelated).

I rarely awake to find myself standing up, btw…

I would go to the right for 100 yards, and I would turn around if I haven’t yet found a sword of elvish antiquity, or a torch or lantern.

Berserker's avatar

@bookish1 Hahaha yeah, that’s what I always do in RPG’s, too. Can’t go wrong with right, I always say. doesn’t always work, but wtv

So I guess I’d go right, or right back to sleep, hardy har har.

Without the extras for the scenario, my first thought would be where is the light most present? And I’d likely move toward light. I’d probably get more lost in the woods. Who thinks up these types of questions?

Haleth's avatar

According to A garden of forking paths, I go both ways.

Coloma's avatar

I wake up in a forest every day. If I go left it is a dead end road, if I go right it leads to the highway. I’d prefer to hug a tree til someone found me. lol

So, what’s the conclusion?
