On what show was the man who faints every time he gets happy-emotional?

Asked by flo (13313points) July 13th, 2012

I guess it was aired a few days or a week or so ago, on either This American Life”, “The State We’re In” kind of show. Is it my imagination or podcast finding used to be easier? I used to just click “podcast”, or “archive” (different sites) and then there would what I’m looking for, in 1 or 2 more clicks. Now I find I have to run around and then I give up.

Anyway this man, who is a grandfather, faints when let’s say during his grandchild’s birthday his….‘s wedding, etc. Anything that could make him tear up, he faints gets paralized temporarily. And it is a recent thing. So now he has to work at not feeling things. Have you heard it?

Found it! Episode 409: Held Hostage Act Three: I’ve Fallen in Love and I Can’t Get Up.

@fundevogel How nice of you to do that research. I wouldn’t know where or how to start!

@Sunny2 This is the first time I knew exactly what someone was looking for. How could I not track it down?

@fundevogel Thank you! so much. Now if only I could just back arrow my way to to get the steps you took to get there. I mean I got as far as here
It looks like they don’t list it in the archives if it is a repeat. And even if I knew it is from 2010 how am I supposed to connnect the key term I think, fainting spells with the description under the “Held Hostage” title? ”A kidnapping victim in Colombia spends his nights listening to a radio station that plays messages from the families of the kidnapped. That and other stories of people held captive—by criminals…”

It was part luck and part deduction. I remembered the hearing the episode you were talking about and while I love the show I was really only listening to it between 2005 and 2010. I figured it might have been originally released in that time frame and scanned a few episode guides for likely titles. I know how TAL likes to wrap it’s episodes around a particular theme and then come at it from unexpected angles so I just crossed my fingers on the title being something that said “I could include a story about being a prisoner of your own body”. Fortunately it had such a title :)

But a lot of the titles are a good bit less effective at revealing their theme so, like I said, I got lucky. I think I’d be shit out of luck if I wanted to find the episode where a cop is called out to deal with a chimp driving recklessly.

@fundevogel thanks again. By the way I tried google too.
And I would like that episode about the chimp too.

flo's avatar

@fundevogel but why is it not easy to find it on Google “chimp driving recklessly”, “cops/police called” How many of them could there be?

fundevogel's avatar

@flo oh em gee. You’re right, it was as simple as a google search for “chimp driving recklessly” and “This American Life”.

@fundevogel I thought you already tried it, and I didn’t even bother. But I so agree with you re.
