Is Romney guilty of tax evasion?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) July 23rd, 2012

Link here. I didn’t follow all of the links in that blog, but I wanted to cut to the chase with you guys.

It would certainly explain why he won’t release his prior tax returns.

Yes, and it needs to come out sooner versus later.

Maybe. Proof may be hard to find. He followed supposedly normal practices for a wealthy person and used out-of-U.S.A. banks to house his money. This has been recommended by the biggest bankers since at least the 1950’s. Even before that it was considered perfectly normal for the wealthy to have accounts and funds in countries all over the world as this made it possible to travel with ease and little difficulty.

So. Your question links to an article that speculates as to the final nomination event, and that I find more intriguing. I don’t believe they’d do that and will be totally shocked if they did.

Please stop and think about this. The IRS has ALL of Romney’s tax records. If there was an issue of tax evasion then Romney would either be in court defending himself or he would be behind bars.

Romney avoided taxes and that is legal. He very likely had a team of tax experts to help him with this. He would be a fool not to avoid paying Federal Income taxes.

For me, the point isn’t even whether he has something to hide – it’s the fact that he thinks it’s acceptable to pay less than 15% on $21 million when teachers and police pay almost twice that for a fraction of the pay. I honestly don’t care that he’s rich, I care that he doesn’t care that they system is fucked up. I care that he doesn’t seem to care how he makes and keeps that money. I care that he says stupid shit like “you people want more free stuff” from the government, when he’s getting $77,00 in tax write-offs for his dressage horse. He is of the rich, for the rich, and to hell with the rest of you. I want a leader that cares about more than the 1%, I want a leader that cares about the welfare of everyone.

Wow....@gondwanalon...and that’s the kind of guy you want to lead the everyday American people who are stupid enough to pay Federal Taxes?

gondwanalon's avatar

@Dutchess_III If you are entitled to Federal Income tax credits, deductions, exemptions and you know about them and still don’t take advantage of them then you are stupid.

Not the same thing as evasion. Not the same thing as hiding money from the IRS.

I hope so.

Just speculating here, @gondwanalon but yes. The IRS has all of the tax returns that Romney filed. If there was anything hinky in them, they would have investigated by now. However, I’m sure they were filed very, very carefully, then checked and rechecked by his “team of tax experts.”

That doesn’t account for what he didn’t tell the IRS about. The heat’s on now. I’m sure they’re investigating, and the results have yet to be determined. Could be interesting.

If you intend to vote for Obama the question is moot.

That is unless you aren’t able to vote on Obama’s “merits” alone.

In that case you must make sure that the competition is demonized.

@Dutchess_III If Romney broke the tax laws then he should pay the price. Good luck with your investigation. Pleasant dreams.

Yes, he broke tax laws. He was hiding money in Switzerland. In 2009, for whatever reason, the Swiss decided not to keep anyone’s accounts secret any more. The government offered amnesty to everyone who confessed by a certain date. Romney confessed. Yes, he broke the laws, but no he won’t have to pay for it. Because of the amnesty, he can’t be legally prosecuted for it.

This is speculation but hiding money overseas is the kind of thing he would do.

He’s nothing but a common criminal, but with the money to get away with it.

“Hiding money overseas.”
