What's the best way to find actors to work for free?

Asked by JSpeer (362points) July 28th, 2012

I’m working on a short film thesis project in NYC and I need to find some actors. I’d like to find actors who are willing to work for free to gain experience and build their portfolio. What’s the best way to start looking? Anybody have some advice on how to make the process as smooth as possible?

Post on bulletin boards at schools, like the drama department at NYU. Look for on-line actor bulletin boards and post there.

You might even talk to Actor’s Equity or the Screen Actors Guild or the Screen Extras Guild to see if they have any thoughts on getting volunteers. And they might help you draw up a legitimate contracts so the actors get paid if you make money off your film.

Or you can go the low quality route and advertise on craigslist.

Check other schools too. Pace has an acting program.

Craigslist.

I saw a film done for the 48 hours film project here in San Diego. Friday night they got the writing prompt, put up a Craigslist ad, and shot on Saturday and it was brilliant. “Narci-Fame.”

You can also get crew for free (well cheap as you’ll be buying lunch!)

Depending on where you are you can post it on actorsaccess.com and extrasaccess.com. I get emails from them almost every day and most of the jobs are unpaid.

thanks @Judi ill check those sites out!

Here’s the link for NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts

I would try their bulletin boards online and the real ones, where you need thumb tacks.

what are thumb tacks? is that like an iPhone?

lol thanks @gailcalled !

No, more like two tin cans attached with string, or a goose quill and a parchment scroll.

I can’t resist referring to the part in the movie Shakespeare In Love where one of the people dragged in off the street to act in the plays asks, “But what about pay?”, and is told, “It won’t cost you a thing!”
