Is mankind approaching a fate similar to that of the Rapa Nui?

The Rapa Nui were the indigenous people of Easter Island who had once lived peacefully until they inadvertently destroyed the environmental underpinnings of their society which led to them falling into nigh constant war as well as forcing them to resort to cannibalism.

Sure, it was an isolated case, a small island that reached an environmental breaking point due to the lack of foresight of the population (humans in general really) in which the resources upon the island could no longer sustain the inhabitants. But, I feel at least, this is a bit of history that much of the first world nations have forgotten as several nations (cough, cough, US cough cough) consume the resources of the world blindly with only a small minority squeaking out in protest. I feel, that what happened to the Rapa Nui mirrors what the future holds for humanity at our current rate of consumption.

So, do you believe that the fate of much of the world will be that of the Rapa Nui? I doubt aliens will come to “save” us as the Europeans “saved” them.

We’re showing the same stupidity as the Rapa Nui but on a much vaster scale. It is like driving a car towards a cliff saying ‘everything will be fine, look at this wonderful machine we are in. How clever we are, what can possibly go wrong.’
