Why can I download the latest Adobe Flash but not install it?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) August 17th, 2012

The error message is always the same: “The Adobe Flash Player is required for video playback. Get the latest Flash Player.”

I have Mac OS 10.7.4 and both Safari 6. and an up-to-date Firefox. When I download the latest Adobe Flash, which is free, I am supposed to first click on the window where I agree to the terms. That never appears; nor does the install icon.

Any thoughts? I hope to avoid a sweaty call to Apple support, if possible.

I skipped Lion and a couple versions of Flash so this might not apply but try going to System Preferences and clicking on Flash Player (at/near the bottom). Under Advanced make sure Allow Adobe to install updates is checked and click check now.

The latest release I saw for Lion was 10.3.183.5 about a week back, not sure if it still is.

If it’s still a no go you can try the ol’ uninstall/reinstall trick; see adobe’s instructions here.

I had trouble with Adobe Flash 11 using Mac OS 10.7.4, I uninstalled it and installed Flash 10 ( I think that’s it ). Check with Adobe Flash website.

Flash 10 is too old. Anyone live near 12037 and want to make a house call?

This from the Adobe website == >
Flash Player

Adobe recommends using Flash Player 10.3.183.5 to get the best experience with Mac OS X Lion. In particular, this version resolves an issue with Flash Player settings panel not responding to clicks in Mac OS X Lion.

This was a couple of months ago.

Thanks. I will investigate further after a nap.

I don’t know Macs, but is it possible that you aren’t signed in as Administrator on the machine? On Windows systems it is necessary to have Administrator rights to the machine and be signed in as the Admin in order to install some software packages and updates.

@CWOTUS: I am the sole owner, Admin. and capo di tutti capi around here (unless Milo has been secretly asserting his authority.)

Tropical Willie found the info, I believe. There has been some sort of general software problem.

The OS X 10.7 does not play well with Flash 11. That’s why the folks at Adobe say to use Flash 10 but its latest version.

I’ve installed the new flash on my PC and it kept crashing, so I downgraded it. Don’t install it!

You can install Flash Playernon a Mac? I thought Apple does’t do anything with Flash player? Does that mean I actually can get Flash Player on my iPad?

I had this problem after I downloaded an AVG update. I thought the problem was because when I then updated Flash, McAfee downloaded as well. I ended up having to get a tech to look at it and AVG turned out to be the problem. Since I got that fixed, no problem with Flash. I couldn’t open YouTube videos or anything like that without getting that message.

I too can no longer open YouTube or animated greeting cards or any video streaming on the news.

I do not have AVG or McAfee. This happened, if I remember correctly, when I upgraded some little “important” patch for Safari.

Maybe the problem is connected to that. Can you uninstall Safari and then reload it? See if that helps?
