Any Culinary Institute of America Alumni here? (or current students)

Asked by NostalgicChills (2787points) August 21st, 2012

I just visited the Hyde Park campus today, (which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and fantastic and perfect) and I have been seriously SERIOUSLY considering going for my bachelors in Culinary Arts there. Is there anyone on Fluther who is a graduate or is currently there? If not, do any of you know anyone who went there and/or is studying there now?

Local restaurant owner is a graduate. He worked at several and I mean SEVERAL other places including inns and resorts. Up and down East Coast.
He is in his dream job and has a large following in the area.

This doesnt answer your question but its related to culinary arts and I think you’ll find it interesting. I saw this video last night which influenced me to look up his book. By far one of the coolest ways to look at cooking if you have a scientific mind.

My niece’s husband’s cousin (nephew?) is there now and thrilled. I will find out whether he might welcome a conrrespondence from a flutherite.

I just sent them off an email and will let you know what the response is.

I know two people who attended CIA. I also know five or six people who attended Johnson & Wales. I don’t know the cost difference between the schools, but it could be worth your time to look into J&W.

@NostalgicChills: My niece’s husband has emailed his nephew, who is now doing an externship at a fancy Manhattan restaurant, the Biltmore. He’ll be back in Hyde Park in Jan. and apparently is deliriously happy with the program and the contacts he is now making.

He has heard nothing back. When I have information, I will PM you.

Buy yourself one fabulous Japanese chef’s knife and start practicing your knife skills. Learn how to dice an onion, and the world will be your oyster.

PS. Have you watched the charming movie, Julie and Julia? If not, do so. Pay partiular attention to the sceen where Meryl Streep (playing Julia Childs) finally learns how to dice a large onion properly.

@gailcalled
Weirdly enough, I have not watched it- but I will definitely add it to my to-do list!
