Where can I get ideas about writing humorous stories?

Asked by Roby (2939points) September 1st, 2012

Comedy seems to be the hardest genre to work with. I have written love stories, fantasy and western. I can’t seem to think of much humor to write about.

Not sure this is really a Meta question, should be in social.

Spelling and grammar will help.

So many funny things happen when you live, and you’re out and about.

If the oddness of life (such as the recent GOP convention) doesn’t trigger any ideas, then perhaps you should keep your day job.

Comedians are born with the gene.

Check out the mini-essays, Youtube stuff, and late night show jokes about Clint Eastwood.

(I have written”.. and genre….please)

I glean my humorous writings from everyday experiences. Truth IS stranger and funnier than fiction.

See if your library has some James Thurber books.

And I kind of remember an annual Anthology of American Humor, if you go to the library look for that.

Don’t even bother. Very little of so-called humor is actually funny.

Either that, or pretend to be an 8 year old boy. That’s what seems to pass for humor from most comedians these days.

The ability to see humor is a gift that not everyone receives. Write what comes to you naturally.
