Which is better? Zune or Ipod?

Asked by cooksalot (1431points) June 4th, 2008

I have an ipod touch, but Pioneer Woman is giving away Zunes this month and I just was wondering.

iPod because its thin. The zune is to big and it won’t fit in my pockets.

if its free get a zune. If you don’t want it I’ll take it. I think your going to get an overwhelming amount of apple support from this site. I personally have an iPhone and use it for music. But I havent heard very many complaints about zune. All my friends that have one love it over regular iPods. Its just that no one really knows anything about them. They aren’t as popular because of the iPod.

ccatron's avatar

check out this zune vs ipod comparison. the smaller zunes, 4GB/8GB versions, are actually smaller than the IPOD nano unless I read it wrong

robmandu's avatar

Daniel Eran Dilger explains it.

In short, if you can get it for free, then turn around and try to sell it on eBay or craigslist.

I think that the problem with the zunes is the user experience. the ipod seems to be a lot more user friendly. and the zune really only offers one more feature, which is the radio. i know people say that the zune can transfer songs to friends, but only if they have a zune, and they only can keep it for 3 days or 3 plays. also @ccatron. you did read it wrong, the only dimension in which the zune 4/8gb is smaller than then nano is in width, but in height and thickness it is larger.

i love my ipod. i personally love apple. i thinks its much easier. also i love the back side of the ipod because i use it as a mirror..lol DO THE ZUNES HAVE THE SHINY THING IN THE BACK LIKE THE IPOD.

(i have a 30gb video ipod)

oh and i got it for lik 50 bucks because i got the student offer when i bought my macbook pro.. so yeah… i like it.. ive never used a zune before, but i do like ipods

waterskier2007's avatar

@ melly, good point the student discount is back in effect so i think u get a rebate of 199 or 299, depending on if u choose the iPod Nano or iPod Touch respectively

melly6708's avatar

omg you can get an ipod touch when u buy a mac computer!!

WOW I WANT ONE.. i think my next xomputer will be a mac book.. i love my computer but its to long .. i want a smaller one.

waterskier2007's avatar

yeah, you get 299 off an ipod touch, which means a 8gb for free, 16gb for 100, and 32 gb for 200. its a pretty good deal

anonyjelly16's avatar

featurewise, the zune has a lot more. But they don’t have the coolness of iPod. Zunes also don’t plug into as many things as the iPod.

Interestingly though, my niece wanted a zune because “old people have iPods.” so I’m not sure if the zune does better with some people solely as the “rebellious” choice rather than cost or features.

waterskier2007's avatar

what do u mean featurewise, as in what features would u be talking about

melly6708's avatar

i can do a lot with ipods..lol

i can get youtube videos to play on my ipod.. movies downloaded (dont have to buy them) also make free ringtones for my phone.. i use it as a usb drive..lol works good actually. a mirror as i stated before lol.

As a sidenote, you cannot expect an objective answer with any type of microsoft vs apple question ok this website. Even when people do side with microsoft, they do so with disclaimers such as “I have a mac…” or “I love apple but….”

waterskier2007's avatar

so what are those features you were speaking of?

melly6708's avatar

lol my pc and mac question was erased :(

oh well

anonyjelly16's avatar

@waterskier: any answer I give you will be followed by 10 more rebuttals and interrogatories. So please allow me to apologize for disrespecting the ipod. Meanwhile, you can look at any of the product comparisons for the two devices and reach your own conclusions.

waterskier2007's avatar

yeah, i understand. its just that some people see different things as ‘features” so i wanted to know what you were mentioning. like for instance, on the vonage commercials they say “vonage has over 25 calling features”, but its so misleading because something as common as redial could be considered a feature

wildflower's avatar

I couldn’t seriously associate myself with a product called Zune…......any French speakers around?

waterskier2007's avatar

what does it mean in french. i search the translation in goosh but it just translated over as “Zune”

wildflower's avatar

This article explains it.

waterskier2007's avatar

haha i actually just googled it. typical microsoft, never thinking things through. its like when chevy marketed the nova in mexico, but “no va” in spanish can be read as “doesn’t go”

robmandu's avatar

I like the MacDailyNews Take at the end:

It almost – almost – goes without saying that the first unlucky soul who buys a Zune then plugs and prays it into his Windows Vista PC causing its inevitable crash will give a whole new meaning to the phrase “choking the chicken.”

waterskier2007's avatar

haha wow i didnt catch that phrase, thats a good one. and i have never heard “plug and pray”

Maverick's avatar

Zune?!? Seriously? I didn’t even think they were available anymore. I still have never actually seen anyone using one. I doubt I ever will at this point.

robmandu's avatar

“Was he inebriated? Do you even know anyone who owns a Zune?”

—Steve Jobs, in a CNBC interview, when told that a Microsoft executive claimed the Zune was a worthy competitor to the iPod

I got your back, @Maverick.

Babo's avatar

iPod!!!

cooksalot's avatar

Thanks @wildflower now I’m going to snicker every time I hear Zune. LOL

cooksalot's avatar

And @robmandu lets not talk about Vista. I’m still steaming. grrrr

wildflower's avatar

haha….I aim to amuse :)

cooksalot's avatar

Well I just got done reading through all the links given to me. I guess I’ll stick to my ipod. Anyone feel like donating a Mac to this homeschool? My poor ibook harddrive is slowly but surely dying. (it’s a G3 really old)

Lost_World's avatar

The ipod any ipod is 10000000 times better then the zune, trust me.

swimmindude2496's avatar

I agree with melonking ipod all the way. I personally love apple and hav a 30GB iPod Video.

pumahawk's avatar

depends on what you’re using it with?

i use mine to listen to music, but anyone with an ipod or anything else spend all their time modding it with pointless junk and apps. i got a zune so i could use it for the 80 gigs of music i originally planned. when i had an ipod, it was quite the opposite.

and the size difference is REALLY not that big of a deal. i can fit both in my pockets quite nicely. i honestly felt a bit better about the zune, and i still do today.

but your call. if your getting it JUST for music, it doesn’t matter. all that matters is storage space.

lbinva78's avatar

My boyfriend and I have had our Zunes for about 2 years now and we have really enjoyed them. Aside from the music, I like viewing movies and the fact that we can play a game together by syncing the two Zunes. One issue I have noticed is the lack of available accessories. Every retail store seems to have an endless supply of earbuds, cases, and items to plug an iPod into, but very few for the Zune.
