Is anyone else experiencing their lurve number being out of sync with the number of GA's received?

Asked by PhiNotPi (12681points) September 18th, 2012

A couple of days ago, my lurve was at 8201. Today, it is at 8229, and I know for sure that I have received more than 5 or so GA’s in that period of time.

Is anyone else experiencing a lurve score that does not match what they are seeing in their lurve feed?

Also, will the problem fix itself, or does it require something more complicated?

You are aware, I’m sure, that we can only receive a certain amount of lurve in terms of points per jelly? 100 lurve points from GAs from each jelly. So if someone has given you 20 GA’s in your lifetime here, any subsequent GAs do not add to your lurve tally. It’s a way to stop favouritism, and shows just how well earned the high scorer’s lurve tallies are, as they have had to get them from many, many different jellies.

As @harple says, it’s the lurve cap in effect. The longer you’re here, the harder it is to earn lurve.

Lurve cap. :(

Well, that’s disappointing, I did not expect to be reaching the lurve cap from anybody. But anyway, problem solved.

I pay little attention to those digits aside my “name” so wouldn’t notice any potential quirks.

At least you know we lurve you, @PhiNotPi!

The lurve cap can be kind of a bummer. Imagine how it feels knowing that the only way you will reach 40,000 is to visit every day for the next 10 years.

whitenoise's avatar

And there you have one more of those ‘worthless’ GA’s @filmfann and @PhiNotPi. :-)

God, and that’s why my lurve doesn’t climb up faster! lol, yes, I know many jellies who joined after me have reached 20k, 30k, 40k, etc. and look at me! My lurve moves with a speed of tortoise! ...one point in two successive days!

I too wondered about this myself. And, what happens with GQs? great questions?

We might want to consider a distinction between lurve and points. I probably get about twenty lurve for every point I get. If there was a distinction between points and lurve, then this question might come up fewer times. It should probably also be mentioned in the FAQ that points will slow down after at some point after 5K due to this limit on the amount of points you can get from a person, even if lurve is unlimited.

Of course, it also seems to be a rite of passage that people ask this question. It would be interesting to look at how many points a person has at the time they notice this phenomenon. Although, I believe some of us researched it first, and thus did not find in necessary to ask it.

Actually, I think there should be a party thrown when someone asks this question. It’s kind of a rite of passage, and in a way, it would be a mechanism for someone to throw themselves their own party.

@PhiNotPi Congratulations! What this means is you now have enough points to notice the disjuncture between lurve and points. You have graduated to a new level of jellydom. Not only that, but you are probably one of the fastest, if not the fastest to achieve the status of moderator. You have accomplished great things!

Lurve caps… ah yes, one of my favourite songs by The Cure.

@wundayatta Thanks! I have heard about the lurve cap a lot, but from some reason I had the impression that it only majorly affects people with lurve in the 20k+ sort of range. I guess I am learning that the more lurve I have, the less it means.

wundayatta's avatar

@PhiNotPi I really think it’s the other way around. The more lurve you have (at least in points), the more it means. Each point you get from now on is harder and harder to get. In order to get points now, you have to appeal to new people, because they are the only ones whose lurve converts to points for you now.

Since there are so few new people, and since new people give out less lurve (there’s a learning curve to giving out lurve), it is extraordinarily difficult to get more points as you move on up. Generally, you have to get lurve quickly, because most new people show up, ask a question, get an answer without learning how to lurve and then leave. When you get lurve from someone new, you know you have done a good job of answering their questions.

PhiNotPi's avatar

@wundayatta I guess that makes sense. The journey from 5k to 10k lurve is harder than the journey from nothing to 5k lurve. I meant “the less it means” in the sense that it becomes detached from how many GAs a person receives.

wundayatta's avatar

I understand what you meant. However, I think that is incorrect. Yes, the relationship between lurve and points changes, but now, each point becomes worth more lurve, which suggests that points mean even more after 5K than they did before.

Now you could argue that points mean nothing, philosophically speaking. Or that lurve is handed out for no reason related to the answer’s quality. If you wanted to make that argument, you could certainly say lurve and points mean nothing. But I don’t think that it is correct to say that because the relationship between lurve and points changes, that means the points are less meaningful. It is quite the opposite. Because you have to work so much harder, points are more meaningful. You should be much more proud of yourself for every point you get from now on.

@Glacial That is brilliant.
And the answer why I had love cats in my head for the last couple of hours or so. :-)

I wouldn’t have noticed, since I haven’t actually paid any attention to my lurve count in a very long time, but usually the cap is behind this mystery.
One day if/when there is an actual discrepancy it will catch everyone off guard. :)

gailcalled's avatar

I am told that you can pander to the newcomers in return for cash (or cake) and they will give you a GA.

wundayatta's avatar

@gailcalled Geez, girl! Don’t be handing out our secrets!

Well, at least you didn’t mention the pancakes!

You can “sort of” calculate the real score by finding how many pages of lure you have here.

Then adjust the url (modify the integer at the end) until you find your first page. It is about 100 lurve per page. I’m on page 1167. So about ⅔rds didn’t increase my score.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

I don’t pay attention to my score any more, unless I have an interesting number. For example, as of this posting, my lurve score is 21112. Very nice.

Brian1946's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake

Now your LS is 21115. Some troll must have given you a GQ just to mess up your palindrome. ;-)

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@Brian1946 : LOL, I noticed, too.

You know how some conservatives claim contraception promotes promiscuity? The cap on lurve definitely makes me sluttier. They way I figure it why not give someone a little extra attention when I like what they’re up to? So what if I get out the massage oils and one thing leads to another?

Deleted by me

I think a movie should be made about this topic.

wundayatta's avatar

Whoa. Whoa. Did I hear someone is giving out massages instead of lurve? Now that’s a deal I could really get into!
