Why have I started my periods so early?

Asked by nailpolishfanatic (6637points) September 20th, 2012

I started my periods two days ago. It’s left me speechless because last time I was menstruating was about 2 weeks ago. Is something wrong with me?

Nothing is wrong. When you are just starting, the periods may be irregular. Some times it takes a while to settle into a regular cycle.

In my experience with several g/f’s, periods can have vastly ranging/erratic timing for any number of reasons. I wouldn’t be too worried about it.

Keep track for six months and see whether there is a pattern. You can always check with your Ob/gyn. You are young, if I remember correctly.

When did you start menstruating? Meaning, how long have you been getting your period? 6 months? A year? Two years?

@nailpolishfanatic: I see that you turned 18 in May of this year. Have you had a change in pattern or have you always been irregular?

I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with you!

Keep track, and if it continues, you might consider getting on the pill. That should straighten it out, although it also has downsides. Might take a bit of tweaking to get the right estrogen/progestin dosing down.

Mine were always early, so I started on the pill at 19. Even after stopping the pill for a few months (after years of taking it) I found that they still were obnoxiously close together.

Whether you decide to go that route, or wait it out, you should probably see the OB/Gyn just to make sure everything is okay.

Sometimes a lot of stress (good or bad) can delay when you start OR cause you to start early. (i.e. moving, starting school, conflicts with friends—pretty much anything that causes high emotions is capable of disrupting your cycle.)

I started menstruating when I was in 8th grade. This has never happened before and seeing most of you mentioned that stress is what could be causing this, coming to think of it it might actually be true because the past weeks have been very stressful (bad) because of tests and studying and what not. And also a lot of (good) stress might add up.

Also I’ve never been irregular with my periods. I’ve always had the same routine since I started menstruating.

If you continue to be irregular for several more months, you might want to mention it to your doctor, given your history of clockwork periods.

@gailcalled Thanks I will definitely keep that in mind!
