Terrible taste of Flagyl?

Asked by cyborg1939 (14points) September 20th, 2012

Is it truly safe to wrap the pill in peanut butter for humans to take? Chance of aspiration?

It would make me choke to do it that way, so I would rather just take it with water, followed by a lot more water. I don’t understand the peanut butter because you don’t want to hold the pill in your mouth for any length of time. I do know that Gatorade helps get it down and I have heard of people using applesauce to take it which would seem to reduce the chance of choking compared to peanut butter . . .

Welcome to Fluther. I used to have issues with swallowing pills so I would get a piece of bread with butter, take a bite and chew it up until I was ready to swallow the bread and stick the pill on the bread and swallow. That masked the taste of the pill and made it slide down more easily.

I would recommend applesauce, it’s got a strong enough flavor to mask the bad taste and isn’t sticky like peanut butter. I hate Flagyl, good luck.

What’s Flagyl?

@gailcalled It is the brand name for metronidazole and it is used to treat bacterial and certain parasitic infections. It can be used in the treatment of Crohn’s disease. For some folks, it gives them dry mouth. The real challenge is that it is a nasty tasting pill and they have to be taken consistently to keep the level up in the bloodstream in order to be effective.

Can you grind it up with a mortar and pestle and add to applesauce (or yoghurt as I have done with pills for my sister’s German Shepard)?

Or will that change the integrity of the med? It does sound nasty as does what you are treating for.

Here is another person’s idea for improving the taste (and recommendation against peanut butter).

@gailcalled You want to get this one down quickly and I am not sure crushing will work. If it is an extended release version you do NOT want to crush it.

If I recall right, the nasty taste of Flagyl isn’t just the taste of the pill, it actually causes a metallic taste in the mouth all the time, for some people. More bothersome is that it can also give you nausea like a mofo.

OP, if Flagyl is too nasty, ask your doctor if Cipro can be used instead. It treats many of the same problems as Flagyl, but doesn’t necessarily have the same side effects (none at all, for me, while Flagyl was unbearable).

Bad after taste? Or, the pill tastes horrible? The generic pill is a fucking nightmare! It falls apart in half a second and tastes so bad it makes you gag. Flagyl the actual brand, comes in capsules at some doses, maybe all, not sure, so it is much easier to deal with. I pay for that when I need to take it now. I wish I had known the first time I took the pill.

Crushing the pill and trying to hide it in some food in my opinion doesn’t not help, because it tastes that horrific. You just have to get it down extremely fast.

Also, the long acting tablet must be taken on an empty stomach I think, so you cannot eat it with anything. Nothing. So read labels.

Some people get a bad taste all day long from Flagyl, that’s why I asked if you meant some sort of after taste. Kind of like how you can taste for hours that you ate garlic. There isn’t much to be done about it. I never have had that problem though.

My mom used to buy these. She would buy them from the health store and fill them with some seaweed or something in powder form :x Anyway could you not use that for the pills? I have thought about it for the anti nausea pill that tastes horrible. Right now I resort to putting a mouthful of water in my mouth first drop the pill in and swallow all at once. Im not sure I want to have to make my own gelatin capsules everyday, would be beneficial if the pill just fit right in the capsule I haven’t actually checked for that yet. Don’t know if any of this helps. Good luck.

I don’t know Cipro but I do know that Flagyl is supposed to be dangerous as well as effective. Carcinogenic. Possible old wives’s tale. Talk it over with your doc.

I’m having the same issue. My ex boyfriend has some “Double 00 VCAPS” that are the perfect size for the pills to go into. I put all of my pills into capsules, but I’m worried about how it will effect the medicine dose. I am going to take the doses after I’ve eaten a big meal and gone to the bathroom so they have enough time for the capsules to be dissolved. Please do not try this until I get back to you. My doses will last seven more days. If this DOES NOT work for my medical issue, I will come back to this post and tell you that it did not work. If it does, you won’t be hearing from me again. Peace!
