Is there an alternative to Google as a homepage?

Asked by Garebo (3190points) October 16th, 2012

I am tired of their in your face influence. Has anyone found some search engine that is close to effective overseas that is in English. The old ones like Alta Vista, Lycos and Excite are now bought by some conglomerate and are excessively commercial.

Are you actually looking for a new search engine rather than a new home page?

Some of my fellow Google fanboys have started using DuckDuckGo as the search engine because of its clean interface and focus on privacy. I am not a fan, however.

You can set any page you want as your homepage.

There are numerous other search sites. Just keep trying them out until you find one you like better. What about Yahoo?

They used to be the main one before Google came along and some people still prefer Yahoo.

I happen to like Google but have used Yahoo on occasion plus they have a section for the top news stories as well.

Re: Yahoo – Its search is powered by Bing (Microsoft).

Also, remember that you can set your browser’s search engine. If you’re using Chrome (who isn’t?), go to tools -> settings -> search to manage the default search engine. That way, you don’t have to go to through redundant steps to do a search. You just type in the “omnibox” (the URL address bar).

I use my email page as my browser home page. checks the mail right away. I used to use the NY TImes as my homepage, and also Yahoo.

For a retro look you could use AOL..

I use duckduckgo for search now. I even moved to a self-hosted email to get off the google teat.

Yeah, I use Chrome and am frustrated for the security crap that they inundate me with. Besides they are too dominant, getting like MS and start controlling way too much for my liking, Sad thing they are now a monopolizer and there is very little choice.
Unless there is a search engine/homepage in Europe or elsewhere worth investigating.

Try Bing. Its not irritating. And they have a different beautiful background every day.

In my opinion I never bother with homepages since I got Speed Dial. I use Google Chrome, then I get the Speed Dial 2 extension, then I open a stack of webpages, and then I open a new tab to get the Speed Dial 2 up, and add all the open pages. I’ve got Fluther, Facebook, Google, Youtube, Deviantart, a bunch of photoshop resource websites and a few tutorial websites. Every time I open Chrome, I’m greeted by a neat display of all the websites I tend to visit on a regular basis. May not be what you’re after but it does a good job nonetheless.

I asked because your question subject says home page but your details say search. I have my own home page that I created in DreamWeaver. I chose a background that I liked and put links on it to all the sites I visit most frequently. I could put a link to any search engine there. Using a particular search engine doesn’t obligate me to any particular home page.

And Speed Dial has been a Fifefox feature since long before Chrome was even created or available.

And if one is trying to avoid dealing with Google, then Chome is not what they’re looking for since it’s a Google product :)

@Buttonstc *Firefox, *Chrome. Agreed and I was aware of that. SD2 being better than the original. Also, Chrome a Google product? Yes. Avoiding Google on Chrome possible? Do Not Track, Adblock, Privacy Mantra. Job Done.

You are correct Jerube, I could have been more clear..
Yes the homepage is what I would like to have more control over.
Secondly, a search engine that hasn’t a predisposition.
