What is the brightest flashlight money can buy?

Asked by mowens (8403points) October 17th, 2012

I have a maglite. I love it. I want a flash light that I can see the beam of lite go really far, because I am a child and I enjoy watching beams of light. My maglite is good. I want the best. Share with me your flashlights. Tell me the brightest thing you have ever seen.

Together we can make this a better world.

For me.

That is all.

Thank you.

I have a MAX-Light and it is 2,000,000 (two-million) candlepower and can shine several miles.

^^^ Wow, and I thought my one million candle power was blinding. I didn’t even know they made 2 mil. CP flashlights! I use mine to spy little beady critter eyes in the woods when I hear weird noises at night. lol

There are hand held direct current lights that are 15 million candlepower. And because they have no filament, they damn near last forever.

@Espiritus_Corvus

Does that have to be plugged in to use, or can it be used without the cord?

First off, you should know about candlepower vs. lumens (Don’t wrry, it’s a simple read). This will help you decipher the ratings of various lights.

Now, personally, I am for The Torch from Wicked Lasers. 4100 lumens, When you do the math, it may sound like it lacks a bit compared to a 2,000,000 Candlepower light, but I assume you wanted a true flashlight as opposed to a hand-held spotlight. The Torch is about the same size as a 2C Maglite, making it a true flashlight, and has no power cord; it runs in internal batteries. (FYI, the Maglite ML100 is a mere 135 Lumens, and the Mag-Tac is around 310.)

Popular Mechanics said, ”Put simply, this thing is like a light saber. Just the reflection off of a paper towel was painfully bright and had us seeing stars.”, so I imagine that it’s pretty bright; paper towels are not exactly mirrors, so that must have been one hell of a reflection!

BTW, have you ever seen a flashlight put out enough light to ignite things or fry an egg?

@jerv While admittedly that sounds wicked cool, I’d be afraid to have it in the house! I think my insurance rates went up just from reading that page.

Mine has a cig plug at the end of a twenty foot cord. Draws 35 watts, 3 amps. Produces 3200 Lumens. It’s good for the boat, but I suppose useless anywhere else. I’ve never seen one this powerful with it’s own battery pack, but I would think it possible. Oops. ^^^Jerve evidently has.

jerv's avatar

@glacial The manual explicitly states a maximum duration of operation to avoid immolation. Just obey the directions and you won’t burn down your house. And gawd help the home intruder that gets that shone in their face!

@DrBill Do you have a link? A quick Google search did not yield a single product for a result.

@Espiritus_Corvus $500? Worth it?

@jerv Do you own one?

@mowens I don’t think there’s a light bright enough to illuminate your flawed political views to you :)

when did a discussion about flashlights become political?

@mowens I won’t know that until its dying day, I suppose. If it lasts beyond 3,000 hours, I guess that will be worth it. I’m paying for a marine-grade product, one that can withstand the ravages of repeated shock, immersion in salt water, constant humidity, a wide variation in temperatures, poor weather conditions and the ill temper of your average sailor. And it’s nice if it floats. Everything on a boat is expensive and demands constant maintenance no matter what the weather. This life is not for everybody by any means. The boat life affords an international freedom hard to find in other lifestyles—but you earn every nautical mile of it. Yeah, altogether it’s worth it, even if you have to pay $500 for a reliable spotlight to do it right (I didn’t pay that much!).

@DrBill He ( @mowens ) and I are friends IRL. He falls out of line with the political views of our group (despite on paper being the most likely to be in line with them), so we’ve all been giving him a hard time lately being election season and all.
