JFK to 89th and Columbus for four people?

I’m flying into jfk with three teenagers (very short flight) at 2:45 p.m. going to 89th and Columbus. We’ve been to NYC several times, but have always taken a taxi or car service, expensive! I’m thinking this time of taking the subway from the airport but am not sure how to do this. Thanks for any help!
