Will a Blu Ray disc play on a regular DVD player and what quality image would be produced?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) October 23rd, 2012

I was looking at the Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter release, and it has a standard DVD and a Blu Ray version. The Blu Ray version has some additional info on it. But my DVD is not a Blu Ray player. Would it still play? Not that this will affect mankind anytime soon, but I was curious how it works.

Nope, Blu-Ray can’t play on a regular DVD player. However, a PlayStation can play Blu-Ray discs.

We lesser humans with old tech in our homes must live without bonus features these days.

I play Blu-ray on my PS3 (playstation) and the quality is excellent.

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Do not put a Blue-ray disc in a regular DVD player, it will ruin it.

You can only play Blue-rays on a Blue-ray player or a PS3. Only the PS3, not the earlier PlayStation models.

Won’t work, Blu-ray players use a blue laser, DVD’s with a red, the DVD laser can’t effectively read the disc because the data on the BD is too tightly packed (among other technical differences).

You can play “regular” DVD’s on a Blu-Ray player, but you can’t play Blu-Ray on an older model DVD player.

Upwards compatibility and all that.

Although you can play a DVD in a Blu-ray disc player, you cannot play a Blu-ray Disc in a DVD player. The reason is that Blu-ray Discs are embedded with more video and audio information than a DVD player is designed to read. In addition, the “pits” used to store the information on a Blu-ray disc are much smaller than a DVD, which requires a blue laser to read the information, whereas DVD players use red lasers.
