What geographic and/or geologic changes would have to occur, so that Syria would become Iran's "route to the sea"?

According to Rachel Maddow, The Guardian, and other sources, Romney said that Syria is Iran’s “route to the sea”.

Didn’t he bother to check a map after saying this the first time, or is this more evidence of Mitty suffering from advancing Romnesia?
